"...we are not fighting flesh and blood...."

From Ruth Gledhill at the Times Online:

Greg Venables, primate of the Southern Cone, has just spelled out the issues at stake in the launch at Central Hall of the Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans. See our report today . 'In North America and here, true orthodoxy is being outlawed' warned Bishop Greg who has taken many congregations and even a diocese or two fleeing liberal episcopalianism under his conservative wing. 'We must remember we are not fighting flesh and blood. This is about principalities and powers.'
....

John Broadhurst bishop of fulham is now on the platform, about to introduce Archbishop Bob Duncan. Broadhurst said he did not believe in the devil when he was first ordained. 'I now believe Satan is alive and well and he resides at Church House.'

(My emphasis)

Principalities and powers is us?

UPDATE: Church House is the Church of England administrative headquarters.

  2. I think they are doing a very fine job of shooting themselves in the foot. I am quietly delighted.

  3. Someone English, please tell me what the reference to Satan residing at Church House means.

  4. It's the C of E administrative headquarters, Mimi. Right by Westminster Abbey. Broadhurst's statement is unbelievable. Can't see how it will not do great damage to FOCA-DUK (don't know what the "D" stands for, but who cares?) among "moderate, centrist" Anglicans

  5. Thanks Lapin. I thought it was something like that, but I wasn't sure. Like our 815.

  6. It's a bishops' coup determined to save the letter of the Gospel by killing its Spirit.

  8. Gives new meaning to the line from Flip Wilson's "Geraldine" —"the devil made me do it!"

  9. I am still shocked by the literal dehumanising of people we disagree with that's happening here. No longer do we have to love them as our neighbour, they must be exorcised. It's one of the most breathtaking comments I've ever heard from a Christian - since Hitler tried something similar with the Jews and much of the German church went along with him.
