BISHOPS GO 1ST CLASS - PRIESTS DON'T GET PAID

Read MadPriest's post at Of Course, I Could Be Wrong from an article in Anglican Information on the cost of whitewashing tombs:

Albert Chama, who is now in Singapore, is accompanied by Bishops William Mchama of Eastern Zambia and Godfrey Tawonzi of Masvingo, Zimbabwe, also with travelling them is the Rev’d Christopher Mwawa of Malawi. The cost of first class flights and accommodation for the four of them amounts to the value of approximately a whole year’s pay for all the currently unpaid priests in Zimbabwe and Lake Malawi! Pictures of the bishops in all their glory fronting the magnificent St Andrew’s Cathedral in Singapore are available on our blogsites.

  1. Oh for heaven sake...you can´t expect Howard Ahmanson Jr and his buddies to pay for PRIESTS who minister to humble human beings to be PAID off too! Where is your sense of duty, of honor, of personal sacrifice?

  2. Leo, surely not! I wouldn't expect the fat cats to dirty their hands by giving money to lowly priests.

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear.

So much about this seems so contrary to the Gospels.

Saying that makes me feel like a hypocrite though since compared to unpaid priests in Zimbabwe I'm probably pretty well off myself.

  4. To me, this is the whole Anglican schism in a nutshell, a princely coup attempt.

  5. Let the prince-bishops have their churches, or their world-wide church, or whatever, but Rowan is losing his mind if he thinks that TEC will place itself under the yoke of the prince-bishops and be forced to wait for their approval before moving forward.

  6. What Counterlight said.

We should keep in mind that with the 1979 BCP, TEC shifted to a Paschal and baptismal theology, focused on the Baptismal Covenant in which all believers renew their commitment and mission. Only a few other provinces have done this. The concept of the primacy of Baptism and the role of all the baptized is not part of their world view. Hence, they have an entrenched hierarchical model held over from the late medieval and early modern era, with prince bishops running things. This is utterly alien to our democratic world view and it is a huge conceptual gap.

Having said all that, y'all know I come firmly down on the side of "Power to the People [of God]."

  7. My personal tragedy in all of this Global South b.s. is my difficulty continuing to send hard-earned money for mission controlled by these princes. How on G-d's earth can these men act as mouthpieces for the Western homophobes and ignore the plight of their own sheep? So, Oxfam has replaced the Diocese of Jerusalem as recipient of my gifts for the Palestinian people.Sorry.
