WAXING CRESCENT MOON

Bright hornéd crescent
Suspended in darkened sky

SATURDAY UPDATE: Tonight at twilight, the sky was a beautiful, clear midnight blue, with the very bright crescent somewhat larger than last night, again poised between the shining planets, Venus and Jupiter, with Orion overhead, slightly to the east. Lovely.

susan, thanks. The haiku came to me when I saw the moon as I was walking tonight.

Balanced between Venus and Jove.

(at least for a couple of nights)

A true "smile without a cat"!

Erp, yes, for now, in the ever-changing night sky, with so few of the bright shining objects visible to us because of light pollution.

Tobias, Tenniel's illustrations frightened me badly when I was a child. The scariest image, hands down, was the Cheshire Cat, and the smile staying as the cat fades away.

I love a waxing moon (is it "gibbous"? I can never remember what that means, except for the phrase "waxing gibbous moon"!). I love how you can see the whole moon, even the shadowed part.

JCF, 'gibbous' means more than half of the moon shows. The root is from the Latin for 'hump'. I love the phrase 'waxing gibbous moon'. 'Waning gibbous moon' doesn't have quite the same ring to it.
