MONEY DOWN THE DRAIN?

From CNN:
In a move that could again dramatically shake up the Republican primary race, billionaire and major Republican donor Sheldon Adelson is expected to donate an additional $10 million to the super PAC supporting Newt Gingrich, Winning Our Future, a source with knowledge of the donation told CNN.

That contribution is expected soon, before the end of the month, the source said. The timing is important because Gingirch, whose campaign has been lagging, is hoping to do well in several of the upcoming Super Tuesday states that vote on March 6 to boost his effort. His allies will need that money to be in a position to help. Because ten states go to the polls on that one day, money is key in order to do well.
Well, I don't know about that. Why isn't money doing it for Mitt? Why is Santorum still in the race, although his campaign war chest is small?
Adelson has told associates his major motivation is to see Barack Obama defeated in the general election, as CNN previously reported.
I don't know about Gingrich defeating Obama, either. If he is the nominee, I believe even more folks will fall out of love with him when the glare of the spotlight shines steadily on him.

Adelson is blatantly attempting to the buy the nomination for Gingrich. I wonder how the five Supreme Court justices who decided that corporations are people sleep nights as they watch the obscene amount of money being thrown around.

  1. I think the sort of people who think corporations are people do sleep at nights, and quite well, because if they cared about humanity they would not suggest corporations were people to start with. They do not care, ergo, they sleep well at nights.

  2. I do wonder if perhaps one or two of the five did not foresee the awful consequences of the decision and perhaps regret their part in the horror we see now.

  3. I agree with Cathy. There is no better sedative or anesthetic than ideology.

  4. Cathy and Tobias, you're right. Idealogues sleep well in the secure knowledge of their rightness.

  5. There is a cynical film by the great Akira Kurosawa titled, "The Bad Sleep Well" about corruption in post-war Japanese industry. A good example of Kurosawa's "modern dress" work.

  6. Thanks Tobias. I'll note the title. I'm thinking of joining Netflix, because the selection of older movies at our small town Blockbuster is not what I would want it to be.

  7. I love it.. that fat pig of a hypocrite is going to muck things up even more for the Repuke Party. Yes, the evil sleep well, as they have no conscience to keep them up at night with.

  8. It is well worth it, Mimi, tho I don't know if Netflix has it. Of course, my favorite film of all time is his Ikiru -- "To Live" -- much more upbeat but still trenchantly observant, and deeply human.

  9. Just a theory I've heard, FWIW:

Adelson is pumping more $$$$$$ to Gingrich, NOT for Newt to win...but for Santorum to lose (he can live w/ Romney).

[Maybe the Orthodox Jew Adelson doesn't want to live in Santorum's Catholic Theocracy? (whereas he knows Newt doesn't really worship anyone but Newt! ;-p)]

  10. JCF, what you say may be true, but I don't know that Adelson's money will do the job. So many Republicans just do not like Romney. None of them will vote for Obama, but they may just stay home if/when he is the nominee. Imagine! Obamacare is Romneycare. What a fine, ready-made slogan to throw at Republicans.

  11. And I have another question to add to your list: Why aren't you and all the women of this country marching in the streets right now against these arrogant Republican men who want to turn the clock back 50 years - before the Pill - and put your bodies into utter subjection to their whims and desires?

I can't believe what I'm hearing; even though it's not an issue that affects me personally, I'm horrified at this ugly backward movement, aren't you?

  12. Russ, women may not be out in the streets in great numbers, but it is not as though they are doing nothing. Much campaigning against the extreme Republican positions is taking place through publicity, writing, and speaking. Although, I'm not in the street with a sign, I've written my share of posts about Ayatollah Santorum (as one blogger calls him), but I'm only one person, and I can do only so much.

If Santorum is the nominee, just wait until he is full time in the spotlight. Perhaps we're underestimating the threat, but I can't believe Republican women will swallow his crap hook, line, and sinker.

  13. Ayatollah Santorum - oh that's good, very good indeed, just perfect in fact. I will have to use that one myself.

  14. I should have given credit where credit is due to Juan Cole at Informed Comment. His entire post is quite good.
