A-MAYING

'Queen Guinevere's Maying' - John Maler Collier
For thus it chanced one morn when all the court,
Green-suited, but with plumes that mocked the may,
Had been, their wont, a-maying and returned,
That Modred still in green, all ear and eye,
Climbed to the high top of the garden-wall
To spy some secret scandal if he might,
(Alfred, Lord Tennysosn -  'Idylls of the King' - 'Guinevere')

  1. When we were kids we made May baskets our of construction paper - weaving the strips of color together, then filling them with flowers (usually taken from the neighbors' gardens), hanging them on doorknobs and knocking and running away.

  2. That's nicer than trick or treat. At least you gave the neighbors back their flowers.

As I grew up, the month of May was all about crowning the Virgin Mary. Children in my Roman Catholic school took turns bringing crowns of fresh flowers each day to place on the head of the statue of Mary.
