NO ISOLATED INCIDENTS

Rep Todd Akin (R - MO)
Asked why he doesn’t support abortion in most cases of rape, he responded, "From what I understand from doctors, that's really rare. If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let's assume maybe that didn't work or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist."

Richard Murdock (Candidate for Senate - R- IN)
During last night’s Indiana Senate debate, Republican candidate Richard Mourdock went too far when he said, “…even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen.”

Rep Joe Walsh (R - IL)
Abortion bans don’t need exceptions for the life of the mother because of “modern technology and science,” Rep. Joe Walsh (R-Ill.) said Thursday.

“With modern technology and science, you can’t find one instance” of an abortion necessary to save the life of the mother, Walsh said after a debate with Tammy Duckworth, his Democratic opponent....  “… There is no such exception as life of the mother, and as far as health of the mother, same thing.”

Add Paul Ryan's personhood bill to amend the US Constitution: "To provide that human life shall be deemed to begin with fertilization.",  Romney's all-over-the-map-but-he's-against-abortion statements, and anti-women shenanigans and misstatements of biology I have left out, and what you have are not isolated incidents but proposed policies that are part and parcel of the Republican Party.  If you don't believe me, look at their platform, pages 13 and 14.  Republicans, all of you, you own these men and the anti-women policies.  They're yours.

  1. Obviously these people live on another planet where ignorance reigns supreme!

  2. One wonders if some sinister force has swept through the Republican Party and sucked out every single last bit of gray matter in there cerebral cavity. Oh wait! It has! It's called IGNORANCE.

    1. Worse, dear friends: these people WANT, desperately want more babies of poor people roaming about in need of minimum wage jobs and military uniforms ... more people to exploit for profit and use as cannon fodder in the wars they plan to wage to make ever more money ... and oh, by the way, they are terrified of the Chinese population (now roughly three times the number of bodies available for use in the USA) and wake up screaming, "must make babies quick! we're outnumbered! women must be forced to produce more!" If they were serious about life being sacred they wouldn't try to ban birth control and they surely wouldn't pimp for war.

    2. Surely vincible ignorance, Elizabeth, for the ignorance could so easily be corrected. And some of them know better but are so frightened of the extremist base, that they will not correct the ignorant amongst them.

    3. Genette, I've never thought of the reasoning you suggest, but it does make a certain sense. Conservatives are generally more opposed to the distribution of free contraceptives, but if everyone had access to free contraceptives, the abortion rate might be cut in half. I've never understood why certain people who strongly oppose abortion are also strongly opposed to contraceptives.

    4. And you might also connect the 32,000 pregnancies from rape to the USE of contraceptives - the number will rise by multiples of 10 if the pill, etc. is no longer available under personhood laws (last number I saw on annual rape-assaults, 1.3 Million per year) ... how many more increasingly vulnerable women will have to deal with those consequences once the delusional are in charge? I shudder. And then I vote.

    5. I voted for every Democrat on the ballot yesterday, but my vote will not help to elect anyone in my very red state. Still, I take a certain satisfaction in casting my votes.

  3. You know, even Mary could have said, "No," to a pregnancy foist upon her. So where do these jokers get off claiming to know the will o' God? *sigh*

    2. I think about THE CHOICE given to Our Lady All.The.Time., Kirke.

Only Mary's FIAT could have lead to the Incarnation. No "will of God" WITHOUT HER CONSENT!!!!

  4. What's even more chilling to me than the goofball men who make these statements is the fact that there are many millions of WOMEN who stand right behind them and say Amen!

These men would not be in seats of power without the votes and support of enormous numbers of women. Who are thus complicit in their own subjection and oppression. What do you say about that, Mimi?

    1. I know, I know, Russ. I don't know what to say about the women, except that their brains must somehow have freeze-dried.

    2. Stockholm syndrome? So accustomed to abuse that nothing else seems real to them? Or just back to the men as ATM explanation? Structure does sometimes oppress in less than obvious ways.

    3. Mmm, I'm not sure all those well-padded gals at the country club and in the malls who get their hair done every Friday, are in church every Sunday, and wouldn't dream of driving anything less than a Buick would consider themselves abused. Though of course they are oppressed.

And liking it very much, apparently. Their situation certainly doesn't motivate very many of them to try to compete with the boys in politics.

Apropos here is Amy Davidson's excellent article in the New Yorker:

    4. Russ,as long as some women have access to their pleasant way of life and the accoutrements that go with it, they don't much care about subservience. Years ago, one man in our neighborhood did not want his wife to have much to do with me because I gave her ideas about independence and equality.

I'll check out the article in the New Yorker. The magazine has been on a roll lately in their writing on politics.
