MY LITTLE TREE

little tree

little tree
little silent Christmas tree
you are so little
you are more like a flower
who found you in the green forest
and were you very sorry to come away?
 see i will comfort you
because you smell so sweetly
i will kiss your cool bark
and hug you safe and tight
just as your mother would,
only don't be afraid
look the spangles
that sleep all the year in a dark box
dreaming of being taken out and allowed to shine,
the balls the chains red and gold the fluffy threads,
put up your little arms
and i'll give them all to you to hold
every finger shall have its ring
and there won't be a single place dark or unhappy
then when you're quite dressed
you'll stand in the window for everyone to see
and how they'll stare!
oh but you'll be very proud
and my little sister and i will take hands
and looking up at our beautiful tree
we'll dance and sing
"Noel Noel"

(e.e. cummings)

Obviously, the little tree in the video is not silent.

  1. What a delightful way to start the morning! Thank you Grandmere!

We put up trees and garlands in the church last night. We will wait to decorate them until after church on Sunday. We haven't had time to do anything in house!

    1. Thanks, margaret. I had fun with cummings' poem and the children's video. I cheat. The tree stays decorated; I cover it with a large bag to keep out the dust and store it in a closet. Near Christmas, I take the cover off, carry the tree downstairs, and voila!

    3. And I'm sure you noted that cummings doesn't use caps either. :-)

  3. Oh, I love that your tree is loud! It speaks quite brightly!

When I got flowers at the hospital almost ten years ago, many of them were loud and I had to send them home or out to the Nurses' station because they had such loud scents! My surgeon walked into the room the second day I was there and asked me where they all went. I said that they were too loud for such a small space. He laughed and said that his wife said that too, sometimes! She was a Tennessee girl!

    1. My goodness, susan s., at first I thought the flowers in your hospital room were singing loudly to you. Yes, flower scents can overpower in a small space. And how very much the act of a southern lady to send them home.

I note you follow cummings' example, too.
