WAXING CRESCENT MOON

Amber crescent moon
Hangs in west-southwestern sky
Pure delight for me
Yes, I am moonstruck.

  1. [Off-topic: Mimi, I thought of you, your family, and esp your beloved late sister, w/ Angelina Jolie's announcement of her double mastectomy, due to family history of/genetic testing for gynecological cancer. Perhaps you might say something about this?]

    1. JCF, thanks for your good thoughts. On my mother's side of the family, cancer runs rampant, and several different cancers occur in more than one family member. My mother had breast cancer twice, but she didn't die from the disease, but rather from complications after a stroke at age 84. My younger sister died from untreated breast cancer. Yes, that's what is so sad about her death. Had she sought treatment, she probably would not have died at age 60. It's 27 years since my diagnosis of breast cancer, and here I am.

I remember a great aunt who died from lymphoma, but my middle sister survived the disease, only to die 17 years later from pancreatic cancer. And then, I know of at least two cousins who had breast cancer, one with uterine cancer, too, and my grandmother and aunt had colon cancer. Oh, and one cousin died after fighting melanoma for several years. The men in the family seemed immune to whatever was causing cancer in the women.

My daughter thinks she's doomed to get breast cancer, but she is hopeful that she won't die from the disease, since neither my mother nor I died from it. She gets regular mammograms, but she does not want to be tested for the genes. My niece who developed breast cancer chose to have a mastectomy rather than a lumpectomy, which was what I chose, and to have a preventive mastectomy to remove the other breast, which I thought was rather drastic at the time, but perhaps she made the right choice.

  2. ah yes - the moon -- sometimes it shines through our skylights. And nothing is quite so lovely as walking on the beach in moonlight almost as bright as day.

    1. Ann, last night the sky was clear, and the golden crescent was so beautiful as I glimpsed it in spaces between the trees when I walked Diana.

  3. The other night I woke up during the night and was startled a bit by bright silvery light coming through the window. I thought of your love of the moon, June, and I thought you would surely write about it! Then I looked directly out of the window and discovered that the light was from the large overhead lights that shine down on the baseball diamond that is right on the edge of the nice sports park that abuts this property! Apparently the town is leaving them on for the summer, daughter says she thinks they are solar powered. So when the moon does reach fullness, it will have competition here!
Guess I would feel even more silly if I had tried to write a poem before looking for the source of the light. :>)

Just sign me "No moon fever here"

  4. Somehow. that's not the same, where's the romance in that?:>)
since the shade on that window is a wooden slat kind of Roman shade (this room used to be the upstairs family room) I'm now
piling extra pillows up against the window. Part of the night time drill until baseball season ends I guess......
    (could be worse, eh?)

    1. ...or not write the poem. I'd have to take action against the lights.
