THE QUEEN SAYS YES

Her Majesty, The Queen, has given the Royal Assent and signed the marriage equality bill for England and Wales.

Lovely. Thanks to my friend James on Facebook for the picture.

  1. Yes!

I wonder what her good bishops will do now.

    1. Bonnie, I don't know. The bishops are still stuck in the last century, and the Queen, Parliament, and the majority of the public have moved on.

    2. So how will the bishop's deal with the fallout that will come from her signing bill I wonder...or explain it? :-)

    3. Christi, the last word from the ABC was that he agreed with "the church" and was against the bill. We'll see if "the church" will move along. I'm not quite sure what Justin means by "the church", because a good many people in the Church of England favor same-sex marriage.

  3. It may have been just one of a number of bills sent for her signature at the end of this Parliamentary sitting, which she wanted to clear off her desk before Parliament left for the summer - but in any case, she sure didn't waste any time about it, did she.

Being an octogenarian, she may have had some personal reservations about the bill - we can't know that until her private letters and diaries are published decades from now - but somehow I just suspect it worries her a lot less than it does her bishops.

    1. Russ, when Parliament passes a bill, it would be extraordinary for the Queen not to sign, whatever her views, but I suspect you may be right that she is less concerned than the bishops. I have no idea if her signing was unusually quick.
