STORY OF THE DAY

St John's Cemetery, Thibodaux, Louisiana
My favorite way home is past the cemetery since it's
about the only place in the whole town where people
keep their opinions to themselves

STORY OF THE DAY - FINISH

My mother always told me to finish what I started, but
she had no idea of some of the people I'd be dealing
with.

STORY OF THE DAY - 'SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER'

Still in his Saturday Night Fever stage, because after
all these years in corporate, it was the last time he can
remember when he really felt alive.

STORY OF THE DAY - LAUGHTER & DIGESTION

There are only 2 things I take seriously,
my aunt said once. Laughter & my
digestion. I'm too old to bother with
more than that.

Good one.

STORY OF THE DAY

Using the drama of the moment because
otherwise there's not enough
entertainment value in just listening to
him.

TWO STORIES OF THE DAY

Eye For Stuff

Soul Mate
How can you be sure it has a soul? she
said. You can't, I said, unless you've got
one yourself.

TWO STORIES OF THE DAY

ANCIENT KINGS

My grandmother kept a box of old
photos in her attic & we used to go up
there on rainy days & sit on the floor in
the dusty light & go through them & she
would tell about witches & broken
hearts & how we came from royal blood
& it was all there in the pictures, she
said & then we'd lose the light & we'd all
go downstairs for dinner & in our secret
hearts we sat taller knowing once we
had ruled the world.

SEASON OF JOY

She asked me when the season of joy
was supposed to end & I said I didn't
really think there was an exact date, so
we left the tree up till June that year.

TWO STORIES OF THE DAY

Dark Night
Counted up all the things she was afraid
of one night & it took so long she fell
asleep from exhaustion
Butter & Sugar
I like butter & sugar & being alive a
whole lot & today I'm kind of sad
because with all the latest studies I
figured out I'm going to have to choose.

THE MAN BEHIND THE STORIES AND DRAWINGS

Elizabeth Kaeton, who knows how much I like the stories, wrote to say that yesterday was the birthday of Brian Andreas, who writes and draws the illustratons for the 'Story of the Day', which I copy and post quite often. She sent the link to an interview with Brian which is a delight.

A late Happy Birthday, Brian!

And here's the Story of the Day from StoryPeople.
this is the center of the universe at this
moment unless you're looking in
another direction or are thinking about
something from a long time ago, in
which case it will wait quietly right here
until you return

English, he said, too bad for you this is
America & he started me out at the
bottom.

STORY OF THE DAY - VETERAN TRAVELER

carries a lot of suitcases but all of them
are empty because she's expecting to
completely fill them with life by the end
of this trip & then she'll come home &
sort everything out & do it all again

STORY OF THE DAY - SIDE BY SIDE

We sat side by side in the morning light
& looked out at the future together.
The story reminds me of sitting with Grandpère 50 years ago next month. Knowing what I know today, the good times and the difficult times, I would do it all over again.

STORY OF THE DAY - CURIOSITY

Can I count on you to be there, no
matter what? she said & I said no & she
said what kind of friend are you? & I
said the kind who won't lie to you any
time you want & I think she kept me
around as a curiosity after that

STORY OF THE DAY - ROUGHAGE

I used to eat popcorn for every meal, she
told me once. It made me feel like I was
in the movies & my life would turn out
happy in the end. Did it work? I said. I
don't know, she said, but I like to think
the roughage counts for something.

STORY OF THE DAY - QUIET LITTLE FILMS

enough quiet little British films around
to protect her from the real world

STORY OF THE DAY - SPIDER PRINCESS

If I was a spider princess, she said, I
would spin webs the color of sky & catch
drops of sunlight to give to children who
watch too much TV & then everyone
would remember to come outside to
play. If I was a spider princess, she said,
things would be different.

STORY OF THE DAY - ATTACK DOG

My aunt had a poodle she dressed in
little red sweaters with little dangly ball
things & I don't think it was any wonder
that dog was so vicious.
