Please Pray For Our Dog, Diana

Tonight our dog, Diana, got out and got hit by a car. She is blind in one eye, and it appears that her other eye is badly injured. I don't know about other injuries. She doesn't look bad except for her eye. We don't know how she got out. Grandpère is at the vet's now with her. I'll let you know when I have more news. I'm afraid she will be blind.

UPDATE: The vet found no other injuries except one abrasion on her nose, but he will have to remove her eye, and we will have a blind dog. The vet says that dogs can do well blind, getting around by their sense of smell. At least she will be in a familiar place. We're not sure if she got grazed by a car, or perhaps got in a fight with another animal. It could be worse.

  1. All my best wishes that things work out OK. I have an old blind dog. If the sight in the good eye is impaired, but otherwise all seems well, don't give up. Hang on to her and see how things go. Dogs are adaptable creatures. She will still get pleasure from life and will have the same love to give.

  3. Oh I am so sorry, Mimi.

I know that she means the world to you. I'm praying for all three of you. I called David and told him. He sends his thoughts, too.

Please let us know how Diana is doing. She is a real survivor. She has been through a lot. I really pray that she pulls through and is alright.

  4. I'm so sorry about Diana.

Years ago we had an old cocker who went both blind and deaf and could not cope with both conditions. If Diana can still hear, I think she'll be okay. She'll recognize your voices.

  6. Hugs and prayers to both you and Diana, Mimi. I live in fear that Jasper will break his lead and do the same thing. (It doesn't help that he keeps trying to chew through the darned thing...)

Both my elderly cockapoos were blind and deaf by the end, but they always seemed happy. They still loved to be petted and loved their food. I hope Diana will be similarly happy.

  8. Prayers for your Diana. I had a Samoyed who went blind when she was about 10. She adapted wonderfully and lived for another 7 years. Dogs have senses and skills we humans lack (esp. not be be enwrapped in self-pity). My dog knew that her home was always a safe place, and once the mental maps were made, she knew her food and water dishes, she knew to sniff out her yum-yums, she knew to find her way onto the couch to nuzzle by my side. Unlike humans, she didn't need her sight to communicate all those happy wags to her tail. As I used to say, she just thought the lights went out for everyone and never came back on. It's your love and caring she wants most of all. Diana will amaze you; dogs are our greatest teachers.

  10. One of my favorite professors, who is still alive and kicking and who has a habit of adopting animals with a little something missing, had a blind dog named Lucy when I was in college. She was the sweetest thing --a little cocker spaniel of some kind-- and she padded around the house quite happily, for many years. May your Diana continue to find love, warmth and comfort with you and Grandpère.

  11. I am so sorry to read this. Much love to Diana, you, and Grandpère. My friend JoAnne has a blind cat who does wonderfully, so I trust this will work out.

Holy Laika, pray for us. Holy Kazan, pray for us. All you four-leggeds, pray for us. Amen.

  12. I'm so sorry she's been hurt. It's so hard to protect those we love, dogs and humans. Prayers for all.

  15. Joining in the chorus of prayers for all of you, Grandpère, you and beloved Diana. My sister's cat, Mac (may he rest in peace, actually I hope he's frolicking in the meadow beyond the rainbow), went blind two years before he died of old age. Even though blind and a bit senile, he made it around the house fine was able to jump up on the counters. The senility, not the blindness, was what would make him howl at night but once he was ensconced in the bathroom, he was happy. So prayers that Diana will adapt as well as the other creatures referenced in this note.

  16. Thanks for the prayers, good wishes, and stories of blind pets. I'm grateful for all. It helps.

I'm sure we'll muddle through. We had a cat that was blind for several years. The worst was that she'd sometimes pee and poo outside the litter box.

Diana loved our large back yard. She'd race around for the pure joy of it, and she loved to chase squirrels, although she rarely caught one. I guess those days are gone.

  22. Prayers headed your way for Diana. And though it's now a similar refrain, I have a co-worker who has a blind dog that does quite well and is happy and otherwise healthy. Diana just might surprise y'all with her abilities and coping skills.

*hugs* to you, Grandpere and Diana

  23. Poor Diana! Poor you and Grandpère. I am so sorry - it is so hard when our animals are hurt.

We had a huge, wonderful tabby cat, Tolopy, a great hunter and wanderer, who was shot and lost his front leg and shoulder. He had a whole new life as a fireside cat, and lived to a great and wise old age. Animals put us to shame, sometimes, with their ability just to get on with it.

Prayers for all three of you - and love from damp Dorset across the water...

    Mike

  24. Mike, sorry to have worried you (and everyone else). When the vet called this morning, I didn't believe him at first. I asked him, "Are you sure?"

  25. Don't apologise, Mimi - I'm just delighted she'll be OK!

  26. oh, I'm so sorry I haven't been over here Mimi. I'm glad to hear that your dog is doing all right. It's been a rough couple of days. I'll continue to keep Diana in mky prayers...

  27. Oh Grandmere Mimi, I am so sorry for you and your little dog. I wish I'd known about this sooner. God won't know that I am praying after the fact as He's not so much bound by time.

I was glad to read that she is going to be alright but this must have been frightening for you. And it is so frustrating to know that we can't protect our dog friends from all harm. I am sorry you had to go through this.

Give little Diana a few pets from me and Rowan.

Oh, and Rowan wants me to send you a snuggle.

    Lindy
