Were You There?

Our man in black, Johnny Cash, and the Carter family. They were young, weren't they? That's Mother Maybelle Carter on the right, June Carter second from right, and perhaps, Anita Carter second from left. I don't know who the other woman is. Please correct me if I'm wrong here, because I'm guessing.

Thanks to Ormonde at Through the Dust for calling the video to my attention.

UPDATE: Ormonde Plater said...

As someone (Susan S) on my blog advised, the four Carter girls are (from right): Mother Maybelle, June, Anita, and Helen. I'm guessing the date is 1968 (the year Johnny married June) 1963 or thereabouts.

  1. Mimi -- I'd e-mail you directly, but I'm not having any luck. I'm requesting prayers for my Diocese, and the senior clergy of the diocese, for tomorrow, Maundy Thursday. You can see why here:

I've asked Jonathan to let people know, and I'm asking you too -- the situation needs much prayer. Thank you in advance. And the blessings of the weekend to you and Grandpere.

  2. Many prayers for your diocese, my Kate.

Mimi, I can't tell you who all the girls are, but I guess you'd have to be a REAL fan of Country Music to REALLY appreciate this clip.

    I'm not. Can you tell?

I did like "Ring of Fire" however. Do I get a few bonus points for that?

  3. Elizabeth, I am a REAL fan of Johnny Cash. I saw him live many years ago, and it was a lovely thing. June, Mother Maybelle, and another of the Carter sisters were with him. They sang their hearts out.

You get bonus points for liking "Ring of Fire".

  5. Ormonde, I think that's about right. Thanks Susan S.

  6. More on the history (from comments on my blog): The year was probably 1963, Johnny was addicted to pills (why he's skinny), and the four women kept him alive and supported him in recovery. Johnny and June married in 1968.

  7. Ormonde, we're getting there. Eventually we'll have it right.

  8. And, did you see the smallness of the guitar he was playing? Ahhhh. I could see the chords, and he wasn't much on the guitar, but his voice made up for it.

I thought I'd lived too long to ever see him in concert. Then, while I was in seminary at Yale, he and June came to a nightclub called "Toad's", and my then-husband got tickets. I was so excited...perhaps more excited than having than MDiv after my name. I was about 20 feet away from them and closer part of the time, standing on an old church pew against a wall. I cried through a lot of the concert. He's part of my life and heritage, too, Mimi.

  9. Sharecropper, that is a tiny guitar, isn't it? We had seats close to the stage for their concert. They did three encores, I believe, surely some of the most gracious performers I have ever seen.

I used to listen to the country and western radio shows on the sly, because, among my friends, it wasn't cool to like that sort of music.
