LADIES AND GENTELMEN, I GIVE YOU LORNA ASHWORTH

The motion proposed to General Synod by Lorna Ashworth reads:

That this Synod express the desire that the Church of England be in communion with the Anglican Church in North America.

The ACNA motion amendment by The Bishop of Bristol, the Rt Revd Mike Hill reads:

Leave out everything after “That this Synod” and insert:

“(a) recognise and affirm the desire of those who have formed the Anglican Church in North America to remain within the Anglican family;

(b) acknowledge that this aspiration, in respect both of relations with the Church of England and membership of the Anglican Communion, raises issues which the relevant authorities of each need to explore further; and

(c) invite the Archbishops to report further to the Synod in 2011”.

We shall see.

H/T to Ruth Gledhill for the video.

  1. I swear to God, Lorna Ashworth bats for the other team. Without knowing it yet, obviously.

  2. Re (a); There are those in ACNA that have never been in the Anglican family, or left the Anglican family over 100 years ago. And WTF is the Anglican family, anyway.

  3. Cathy, when I saw the video, I thought, "I'm glad she's not on our side." Now here you are telling me she may be?

    Arrrggh!!

Doesn't matter, Susan. If you're biblical, then you're Anglican - or at least on the waiting list to be invited into the Anglican Communion.

It's hard for me to believe that anyone takes someone like Lorna seriously, but apparently a good many English Anglicans do. She's their Sarah Palin.

  4. What's with the slight N. American edge to Ashworth's accent? What's her background?

Ruth Gledhill also links the Bishop of Fulham, John Broadhurst in a BBC TV interview uttering the
flat-out lie that ACNA is "actually supported by most of the primates ..... of the Anglican Communion".

    WV "Coote".

  5. A more recent post by Ruth Gledhill describes Ms Ashworth as "a Canadian-born mother of three who works as a volunteer at All Saints’ Church in Eastbourne".

  6. Lapin, that explains the NA edge to her accent. What was the swaying back and forth about? Nervousness maybe.

  7. Ormonde, I think she makes flowery clothing.

  8. With some of the folks on the other side, it seems the truth is fluid - whatever works for the moment.

I heard Lorna say "unity" and "Anglican" more than once, but I never heard her say "Jesus". She said "biblical", but she never said "Gospel".

    There's a waiting list?

... So, in life in the general sense, I'm in a gargantuan queue?

    That explains nearly everything.

(Mimi, this is absolutely nothing to do with the post, but I just wanted to tell you, I went to the opera this evening to see Cosi Fan Tutte at the ROH, it was fantastic, do you like Mozart operas? I love them to death. The Marriage of Figaro is my favourite opera of all time. I have loved it for years and years and never get sick of it no matter how many times I play it.)

  10. I must tell you, Cathy, you are making me insanely jealous. I love all Mozart, including Mozart operas.

  11. Cosi is my absolute top opera. Stunning woodwinds in the ensembles.

  12. hi Mimi, that wasn't my intention, but honestly, it was so brilliant. It was a modern-dress production where the baritone and tenor disguised themselves as Axl Rose style rockers with leather pants, long hair and tatts. Which was extremely funny. And also, in the case of the tenor, who had a sort of Nicolas Cage thing going on, strangely hot.

    It was fabulously well sung.

Lapinbizarre: I fell utterly in love with the Marriage of Figaro and with Don Giovanni at about the age of 14 and they have always held a cherished place in my heart and always will. I must pay more attention to Cosi though - it's risen in my estimation after tonight.

At the end, instead of the couples staying together, everyone stormed off stage. Which made sense. I don't see how a relationship could hold together after all of that.

  13. That last comment related back to tonight's production again - sorry, that may not have been clear.

  14. Also, Mimi, on monday I saw Lucia di Lammermoor, but what makes me insanely jealous is you saw Nathalie Dessay sing it!!! I wish she'd do it again in London so I could go see her. She was fantastic, I bet.

I'll stop ranting on about opera now.

  15. Cathy, it sounds like a wonderful production. I understood that you meant tonight.

  16. I'd love to do the Smithsonian opera tour again sometime. It's pricey, but we had great seats and a wonderful tour of the Met, including backstage. Our tour guide told us that we were blessed with four outstanding productions, and not one of the principals was replaced. One conductor took over on short notice, but he did a splendid job.

Hearing both Natalie Dessay and Renée Fleming was a dream come true.

  17. oooo Grandmere Mimi you should do the tour again, and if you're ever in London and there's enough notice (cos these things tend to sell out), you are absolutely welcome to come with me and my mate Stephanie to see something, if you like.

  18. (PS - I'm certainly not saying you have to!!)

(But you do get all the great singers in London and you can get quite cheap seats)

  19. Oh, I may splurge and do the tour again. I don't know about London. I'd love to, but the trip last year to the north of England was not easy. Once I was there, it was fine, but getting there and coming home was difficult. Nor did I get a whole lot of sleep while I was England.

  20. Once I was there, it was fine, but getting there and coming home was difficult

Exactly how I found going home to see the folks in Australia, which is why I don't plan to go there again anytime soon either ... Anyway, if you ever do make the trip over to Blighty again, me and my mate Steph are just a pair of loud Aussies really but we go to the opera every few minutes and quite often take friends and others along, so do join the party if you wish.

  21. Does Lorna teach P.E. by any chance?
