THUS SPAKETH BP'S CEO TONY HAYWARD

From the The Guardian:

"The Gulf of Mexico is a very big ocean. The amount of volume of oil and dispersant we are putting into it is tiny in relation to the total water volume," he said.

Yeah, yeah, Tony. Most consoling. By the way, the Gulf of Mexico is not an ocean. It is a gulf. Its name gives it away.

Hayward promised that BP would "fix" the disaster, which is on course to eclipse the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill as the worst US oil spill in history. "We will fix it. I guarantee it. The only question is we do not know when."

Hayward stressed that BP's efforts to contain the spill had succeeded in dispersing the oil and preventing large amounts reaching the shoreline around the Gulf. But environmentalists are concerned about the unseen damage being done to marine life by the oil which is sinking to the seabed.

Those of us in the vicinity of the leak are pretty anxious to know when the "fix" will be in.

So your job may be on the line. That's tough, especially in these tough economic times. But I have a sneaking suspicion that you won't be reduced to life on the dole.

Thanks to Cathy for the link.

  1. I read this morning that the oil leak is probably not affecting marine life as badly as we think, because it's located in an area of the Gulf that is biologically dead.

But that's no reason for being cheerful. The reason the area is dead is because most stuff there has been killed off by chemical/fertilizer/etc runoff coming down the Mississipi into the Gulf.

So here's something that will, I hope, cheer you up, and not Doug-style either.

  2. Kishnevi, not as badly as we think doesn't help a lot. I've seen too many pictures of birds, both living and dead, covered with oil, and I still worry about what we don't see.

    I'll check out your link.

  4. Mimi,

I hope you are awake to read this. I didn't see it on your blog, and I knew you'd be interested.

I'm literally sick to my stomach from reading it. Must. Breathe. Deep.

  5. Here's BP: "It's such a big body of water that this is just an itsy bitsy teensy weensy speck in the *ocean* (err... we mean Gulf)."

Here's me: Lord, forgive them, for they know not what they do!!

    Bastards!!

  6. Ann, one, two, three, GO.

Mark, I read your link, luv, but you may want to pass it on to another blogger. I'm done for now.

SCG, it's fitting that Hayward's mug will stay near the top of my blog for who knows how long.

  7. "on course to eclipse the 1989 Exxon Valdez oil spill"?

Reports today indicate that the oil from this well equals the volume of one Exxon Valdez every four days.

  8. Paul, yes. Perhaps more like 70,000 barrels per day, rather than 5000.

Jon Stewart was very funny on BP's ideas and attempts to stop the leak in a you-laugh-or-you-cry sort of way.
