In the comments to my earlier post on the picture below of Roman Catholic Cardinal Raymond Burke presiding at the ordination of deacons, we discussed the gloves that the cardinal wears. I thought perhaps there was a special ecclesiastical name for the gloves, but they are simply ecclesiastical gloves, though a fascinating accessory, surely.
I'd like to know the date of the archived response to the query in the New York Times.
Of course, the questions about the cardinal's gloves are hardly of earth-shaking importance, but I was intrigued by them and wanted to know more about the ecclesiastical accessories.
I feel purer just because you´ve discovered how pure it made the gents--imagine, even the priests wore them--send off a pair to Fr. Jake and Padre Mickey immediately (no doubt you´ve already sent the overseas packagettes to Mad Priest and DP)..Lesley+ won´t need them because she´s pure already but the English HOB´s could use a gross or twelve (with special pointy finger tips).
ReplyDeleteLeonardo, tell me which style of gloves to choose to send off. You're the expert. And if I send them, will they wear them?
ReplyDeleteThis guy's gloves look like gardening gloves. Keith Ackerman has a pair but the are gold lamé and he wears a big episcopal ring over them - he also wears little slippers -- all too much.
ReplyDelete- all too much.
ReplyDeleteTo say the least!
Thanks for your research, Mimi! Methinks gloves do not purity make, but..........:>)

Nij, I wore white gloves for dress-up when I was a teenager and college student, and I was pure back then. I'm just saying. :-)
ReplyDeleteThey may be "ecclesiastical gloves" but they are HIDEOUS ecclesiastical gloves.
ReplyDeleteMy eyes! My eyes!
Really awful. What was the cardinal thinking?
ReplyDeleteKeith Ackerman, now a bishop in the Southern Cone, used to be my bishop. If I'd ever seen those gold lame gloves and the big ring, I wouldn't have held myself responsible for any subsequent actions.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if there's a picture around of Ackerman in his gold lamé gloves. That would be a jewel of a find, especially if he was captured wearing his little slippers, too.
ReplyDeleteMimi, since we are of the same generation, I'll bet you wore white kid gloves back then, as I did in my undergraduate days at SMU. They made me look pure enough, but I'm afraid that they didn't prevent me from falling victim to impure thoughts.
ReplyDeleteThose green ecclesiastical gloves provoke something much worse than impure thoughts.
While you're on liturgical minutiae, check this out. The web-site on which it appears is a fascinating source of Ultramontane Anglican carryings-on.
ReplyDeleteMary Clara, impure thoughts were a regular part of my confessions, despite the white kid gloves.
ReplyDeleteThe green ecclesiastical gloves are in another realm entirely.
Grandmere, there was a huge oil portrait of himself that hung in the Cathedral library. My friend and I always tried to get to Bible study early so we could sit with our backs to it. Guess that's why I don't remember whether or not he was wearing the gloves and the ring. Praise God, he took the thing with him when he decamped.
