Col. Lawrence Wilkerson former chief of staff to Colin Powell is very blunt and candid about racism in the Republican party.It's no surprise to me that Col Wilkerson states candidly that the Republican Party is "full of racists". Louisiana is a very red state, and I'd agree with the colonel that the Republican Party here is "full of racists".

I wonder if the real reason so many angry Tea Party or fringe whoevers hate the President so much is not just that he is of mixed race, but that the surface fiction of equality and progress and changed attitudes about race was so bluntly exposed by his election. Seems so many continuing ugly ideas have been revealed in the last four years - "polite" lies exposed, subtle meanness and semantic dodges of real on-going oppression - no "comfortable" place left to deny the truth that there is still much to be done - a few notable public successes (Oprah, pop stars and athletes making huge money)not the excuse to declare America THE land of equal opportunity that no longer needs affirmative action or consent decrees to protect voting rights that the regressive, still hateful few would like them to be ... the veil has been drawn back once again by "that man" in the Oval Office, even if that wasn't his intent ... and they loathe him for it.
ReplyDeleteAround here, there are those who will not make openly racist comments, but they will laugh at racist humor and say nothing when racist words are spoken by others.
DeleteSince Tom and I are old, our social life is much constricted, mostly by choice, but because of that I am spared much that I would otherwise find painful.
