“Happy Birthday To Ewe!”

From the Kansas City Star:

LONDON | Britain’s Prince Charles surprised his wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, with an unusual gift on her 60th birthday: two sheep, Agence France Presse reports.

Camilla is delighted with the rare breed ram and ewe, which cost the heir to the throne about 300 pounds ($617) each, the Daily Mail reported Saturday.

It headlined its story: “Happy birthday to ewe!”

An unnamed friend of Camilla told the paper: “The royal family have so much already that they don’t actually give wildly extravagant presents. Their gifts tend to be more thoughtful — although some may view them as a little bit crazy.”

Crazy? Not at all. What woman would not be thrilled to get two sheep for her birthday?

Here's the kind local human interst story that MadPriest should be giving us, but he appears to be falling down on the job. With him having three border collies, who are bred to herd sheep, but are now herding MadPriest and his long-suffering wife, you'd think he'd take note.

  2. Two sheep for the difficult person you shop for--would my husband like these for his birthday? He's very difficult to choose anything for. . .

  3. What would I do with two sheep? I'd sheer them and spin wool yarn on my spinning wheel and pray that they got along with my dog, who is not a sheep dog.

My husband wouldn't have to cut the grass so often. That would be a plus.

  4. Forgive my interruption, Mimi et al., but I could use your support and prayers.

My 91 year old mama had emergency surgery in Arkansas "last weekend"; my sister called me today to tell me this, and I am upset.

Mama is recovering physically, but so far, not mentally.

  5. We had a border collie as houseguest last weekend. She certainly is a bossy little thing! She dragged her human slave down here for an agility competition. She "double Q'd" three days in a row (whatever that means). But she was nice enough to share one of her ribbons with Harley.

What a contrast from this weekend. I dropped my other half off at the airport yesterday. He took his choir to England for a residency at the Bristol Cathedral I'm just knocking around the place today. But Harley is taking very good care of me and making sure I don't get too lonesome. Talked to Ed this afternoon via his really kewl new IPhone. The odd thing is that the sound quality was better than when we are just speaking across town.

  6. Johnieb, prayer requests are never interruptions. I will pray for you and your mother. And for the rest of your family, too.

  7. Hey, Mike, the Lonesome Cowboy.

The odd thing is that the sound quality was better than when we are just speaking across town.

I've heard that from other people, and I find that depressing.

Not that you can have a conversation with Ed while he's away - I'm glad for that - but that we can't have good, clear conversations with folks nearby.

You take care of Harley and his ribbon, and he will take care of you.

  8. Madpriest is married! I never had much time for Camilla as I'm a Diana fan but I suppose it's a useful gift! All we like sheep have gone astray = kinda fits Charles!

  9. Very thoughtful gift. They can dress the two beasts as their owners, send 'em on walk-around, and no one will ever be the wiser.

  10. John and Lapin, you gave me my first laughs of the day. That's a lovely gift.

Indeed, all we like sheep have gone astray, especially you Lapin. You manage the going astray business nearly every day.

  11. Sorry about that!

Your blog profile, which I FINALLY read yesterday evening, indicates that we may share a common background in librarianship. I tend to avoid reading profiles, since it is all too easy for the writer unwittingly to embarrass her/his-self while revealing her/his enthusiasms and draw the reader into the sins of pride and lack of charity. Which is why I have never dipped my toes into those particular waters myself, and drawn up a profile. Have to congratulate you on having written one of those rare profiles that comes through with flying colours.

  12. Lapin, I'm pleased that you approve of my profile. I tried to be mostly honest. I didn't go into my occasional bursts of temper and other vices which will remain secret, unless I accidently or on purpose reveal myself in my writing here.

  13. Elizabeth Kaeton posted a nice piece on Tammy Faye yesterday. In later years I came to appreciate her open nature. Kind of surprised that we've seen nothing on her over at MP, though I suppose that she was pretty-well specifically a North American phenomenon.

  14. Tammy's make-up was startling, but I would not dream of making fun of her now. I've had more than one person tell me she helped them, and I have to believe that's true.

  15. I'd love a pair of sheep, except that I'm pretty sure the apartment complex wouldn't let me keep 'em. Once I have a yard, though...
