Fr. Jake On Our Church

Oh my. I read what's posted below at Fr. Jake's, and I absolutely love what he said. I suppose most of you who read my wee blog read Fr. Jake, too, but just in case you don't, I wanted to post these wonderful words of his:

But, I need community. In my journey, while traveling to the outer edges of spirituality and back again, I stumbled across this Church. As flawed and frail as she is, this is where I have landed. This Church has become my spiritual home. Where else would I go?

The Church is a harlot. But she's all we've got.

Let us pray,

"Gracious God, we pray for your holy Catholic Church. Fill it
with all truth, in all truth, with all peace. Where it is corrupt,
purify it; where it is in error, direct it; where in any thing it is
amiss, reform it. Where it is right, strengthen it; where it is in
want, provide for it; where it is divided, reunite it; for the sake
of Jesus Christ your Son our Savior. Amen."

Amen, and amen, and amen.

  1. Have you read "Nobody Crucifies Nobody Anymore" over at Fr. Jake? Beautiful piece.

  2. Lapin, I read it. It is beautiful and from the heart. It's a good reminder of priorities and keeping things in perspective.

I have to say that I'm tired of talking and reading about the bishops' statement. I'm going to give it a rest for a while.

  3. I love the sentiment. I don't like the picking up on that ancient anguage feminizing the church and calling "her" a harlot. There are other ways of talking negatively about the church (God knows) without using those words. (We don't personalize the church as a "he" or call "him" an abuser.)

  4. Jane, when you pick up on the old feminine language, you get Sophia and Mother Church and the mother bird, too, which are not bad.

Jake wanted to make the point, and make it strongly, that the church is not perfect and never will be, because it's made up of sinful human beings.

On the other hand, I see your point, too.
