Yesterday was Grandparents Day at the Roman Catholic school that two of my grandchildren attend. We began with a mass in the church to celebrate the feast day. The new pastor is originally from Ireland, and he still speaks with his Irish brogue. His enthusiasm captured the attention of the children and the adults. He advised us grandparents to sit before we fell down and told the children to remain standing. Then he told them to turn to each grandparent to tell them, "I love you." Then, he told them to remind us that we could not talk in church, an inversion which made everyone laugh.
The children's choir performed and led the singing nicely, and I thought we were on our way to passing a good time.
Instead of reading from the Gospel of John, he recited a simplified paraphrase from memory, and then on to the sermon. He began by talking about peace, and then proceeded to speak in support of Bush and his bellicose actions and words. He said that the US was the only country willing to expend lives and money to keep the world safe from terrorists - to keep a cordon of safety against them. What nonsense! A cordon?
I looked at Grandpère and rolled my eyes. I believe that he feared what I might do. The priest finally moved away from the "Bush keeping us safe" meme, but I was so thrown off balance, that I could not tell you what he said after that.
After the offering was taken, he departed from the liturgy to lead us in the "Hail Mary". I like the "Hail Mary" and I still say it from time to time, as a carryover from my RC days, but I thought this kind of departure from the liturgy was frowned upon by the RCC.
When I attend a RC mass, I'm generally torn about receiving the Eucharist, since I am officially not welcome at the table, being a heretic and an apostate in their eyes. I have no doubt that the Lord Jesus welcomes me, and many RC priests whom I know welcome me, but I had decided that I would, as a general rule, refrain. However, when I thought about my grandchildren asking why I didn't go, and having to explain that their church did not welcome me, I decided I would break my rule this once. Let them retain their innocence for a while longer.
What right does the RCC have to ration the Eucharist? What right do they have to exclude followers of Jesus from the Lord's own table? The priest says, "Take and eat," and, "Drink this cup," but he doesn't mean it for everyone. That's not right.
Our grandchildren showed us around their school with great pride, and we enjoyed the visit. The school has been loving and supportive to the children through the divorce of their parents, and I will be forever grateful to them for that.
My grandson had made a picture of Grandpère and me. In the picture, I am much larger than GP. In reality, that is not true, but that's how he sees us. I am seated in front of my computer in the drawing. We all got a laugh out of that, since GP thinks I spend far too much time in precisely that place. We couldn't figure out what GP was doing in the picture. There's some kind of tower-like structure that he seems to be reaching up. We'll have to ask GS next time we see him.
Thanks be to God for the little ones.
Grandmere, I love your reflections. I'm glad you partook of the Eucharist with your grandchildren. I so like the description of your grandson's picture of you and Grandpere. LOL!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for your comments and assurances at my blog. That means a lot to me.
Jan, tomorrow we're headed for another Grandparents Day, in New Orleans, with another Roman Catholic mass at Jesuit High School.
ReplyDeleteProbably, once again, I won't adhere to my default position regarding receiving communion. It's the Lord's table, after all.
yes, it is the Lord's table. I always feel kind of sad when I can't take communion. It's like that with the Missouri Synod Lutherans too.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe the priest said that. oh,well.
Oh, he did say that, Diane. He did. The former pastor would never have said that.
ReplyDeleteI edited the post to put more of his words in bold type.
Wait a minute! I thought the Pope had declared that Bush and the war were wrong. Did I miss something?
ReplyDeleteYou should write Papa Ratzi and tell him that one of his priests is off message...
Glad the little guy had a good time with you, though!
As a Roman Catholic my head and heart hurt very much right now. As a Roman Catholic with an open mind and heart, with friends like you Grandmere, Jan, Diane and more... It is just heartbreaking.
ReplyDeleteFirst and foremost, I am glad you had some food at the table. This is one of my biggest gripes about my church. Good Lord, can you imagine Jesus handing out loaves and fishes and then getting to the place where you stand, in all of your rich beauty Grandmere and saying... "Oh no! Dreaded apostate and Episcopalian, worse yet because you left the one true church!"
I think not. It is inane, insulting and frankly completely unChristian.
Uh oh, FranIam in full rant mode. Then on top of that - he brings Bush and politics into it.
That is so wrong at so many levels.
And as Wormwood's Doxy aptly points out... Um, yes. With all my complaints about B16(which is how I must think of him!) he is very, very against the war.
Something -that for all their complaints about cafeteria style Catholics - many priests in the US completely ignore.
On another note, at my fine parish church, which I love, we had a visiting sister from the Daughters of Charity speaking about poverty and need in the Diocese of Gallup. It is the poorest in the land- she was there for 6 years.
Anyway- she both proclaimed the Gospel and did the preaching.
Heresy in some circles, starting with B16's!!!
Good wishes today Grandmere.
Fran, I'm sorry I caused you pain. They are so very wrong about this. It is the Lord's table. BUT IT'S NOT YOUR FAULT, MY FRIEND.
ReplyDeleteIl Papa is correct about the war, but this priest is not paying attention.
I wonder if he might be one who would lambast the "cafeteria Catholics," who pick and choose which pronouncements of the pope to follow.
How you make me smile Grandmere!
ReplyDeleteI like the comments you have received. The English bishops insited on the "Hail Mary" being included in the bidding prayers and the same applies in Ireland I think. The Irish are often eccentric at Mass! "All are welcome" we say and sing but do we mean it???
ReplyDeleteThe Irish are often eccentric at Mass!
ReplyDeleteLOL. They are. They are. His reciting a paraphrase of the Gospel instead of reading it was an unusual touch, too.
I'm glad you took Communion, Mimi!
ReplyDeleteI had a busy schedule on Ash Wednesday, but I really felt the need for a service and Communion. I stopped at a Catholic church for a service that was good timing - on the way to a meeting I had to cover. I would have taken Communion, but didn't. The crowd was small and I was afraid I stuck out too much. I still wanted it, though.
Pat, I know what you mean. I doubt that you would have been refused.
ReplyDeleteIt is not good to scorn your church or 'the church' if that is better put.
ReplyDeletePlease Pray for the fathers of the church and the faithful; ALWAYS!!!
Please do not be offended but 'learn' your faith. The fathers have been given the power to "bind on earth and loose on earth" as provided to the apostles and thus the holy church by Christ. Rest assured He (Christ) has a reason for having the church have the power to "bind" and "loose". Thus the priest is permitted to withold a blessing or give a blessing this includes Holy Communion.
The Roman Catholic Church answers to God and is not to be subject to popular opinion because it seems right to us. Our duty is to 'know' our faith thoroughly and obey God.
Please note your "rants" are just as bad or worse as why you are "ranting".
A Christian is obligated to accept his circumstances WITHOUT complaining or protest depending on Christ in all things. WE all have fallen so far from this it sounds absolutely foolish. It is however the true way for us Christians.
Protestants from the beginning elected to explore new religious ideas. This is a choice that was made. The Holy Church is obligated to be just that "Holy", uncorrupted and unchanged. This is the 'church'. Protestants even to this day are trying to find out what the truth is (note all the thousands upon thousands of religious that came from the protestant movement). The ideas noted in the this blog is evidence in itself. One can not truely beleive that they can take communion without believing in the faith that it is comming from???
But yes! people beleive they can do what they want "because God is all that matters". Well God said do not fornicate or divorce either but we do this with ease and acceptance. I am only now learning that hell has a special place yet for fornicators and adulterors and divorcees. No wonder the scripture continuously warns against these behaviors.
I guess the best thing is to hope that ALL of this is wrong...religion in general. Because if it is right we are all doomed.
Me to unfortunately.
God help us all.
What 'annonymous' said is awesome.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
I hope I can one day get my act together and truely give my life to God.
Sitting around complaining is not the path of rightiousness; I am completely sure of that and I do not know anything about any church.
I also know that it is no good to take communion when you 'are not' a beleiver, or are (for some reason) non-compliant with the teachings of the church (although you may love Christ and attend to prayer), or when you refuse to follow the commandments of God ie: NO fornication, NO divorce, NO stealing, NO cheating, NO KILIING etc.. and when you have rendered yourself (for some reason) estranged or removed from the faith; especailly if that faith is where the local parish is that is administering the Holy Communion.
My small research on the matter reveals that people who 'consume' communion in these conditions or in similar conditions are "partaking unto themsleves a curse instead of a blessing". The partaking is false
One of the many, many reasons I found (THAT GLARES OUT) is that God teaches that in order for US to COMMUNE with Him WE must ALL be of ONE mind. If we are not than we are not truely "communing".
Taking communion to make your kids (or grand kids)happy or "stay innocent a little longer" is absolutely dreadful. I am so sorry for this person.
It's very nice to think; but lacks holiness.
This person does not even know what taking Holy Communion is actually for. I am no priest but I know for sure it is not for her kids "innocence".
I was surprised of how much is right in the bible in plain english.
Read the bible....
Obey God......
Anonymous, why are you anonymous? Make up a name when you post, please.
ReplyDeleteAll Christians should pray for all churches, not just "the church" as you call it.
I'm not offended, but we all answer to God, not just the fathers of the Roman Catholic Church.
Salvation is not through a church, or the fathers of a church, but through Jesus Christ.
You call this a rant? Then you've never seen one of my rants. If I want to rant, I can do a lot better than this.
No church is perfect because all churches are made up of sinful humans beings, Anonymous. The leadership and members of your church have been less than perfect over the centuries, and you well know that.
I am only now learning that hell has a special place yet for fornicators and adulterors and divorcees.
Well, perhaps not. Perhaps some of them even join the Communion of Saints in heaven.
Jesus and the Gospel are right, and we are not all doomed, Anonymous. God loves us, each one of us, infinitely, and he wants to share his life with us. He said, "Do not be afraid."
God bless you and keep you.
If you come back, make up a name, and tell me that you were the anonymous that posted on the Holy Cross Feast day.
Taking communion to make your kids (or grand kids)happy or "stay innocent a little longer" is absolutely dreadful. I am so sorry for this person.
ReplyDeleteTell me what taking communion is for, Amdetsion?
Is "this person" you refer to me? Don't waste you pity, then.
grandmere mimi
ReplyDeleteGod bless you...Amen
It seems that from your responses it seems that "the church" is of no use to you.
I hope I am wrong.
Are you just being liberal because its nice and very popular in this age? Or because you really and truely beleive God is as liberal as you think?
I admit that liberalism is a lot more "God like". It (liberalism)even has an aire of "holiness" about it.
It feels good to believe that "all is well and good" and "God loves everybody" and "everyone is saved" and so on.
I feel the same way. NO kidding
I know many people who would agree with you that knowone needs "the church" or "the churches" (as you prefer) or priest and such.
Maybe this is right.
The only problem I have is that thier is absolutely no scriptural support for any of this thinking at all.
So while I hope for the same things as you do I am convinced that man (human beings) have sinned against God and continue to sin. We are hopeless do to our constant sinning. Thus if a person refuses to obey God and repent his sins, be baptised and partake of the body and blood of Christ he is dead ("he" includes woman). This is what Christ preached. This of course do not include ALL people.
The Holy Church of God is "one". It is neither two or three and is indivisable and uncorruptable. "Even the gates of hell can not prevail against it" (the Holy Church)says our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Our Lord said of His Church (he did not say 'churches')that He is "returning for it".
You may not believe much of what I stated but it is all I have to offer. It is the word of God.
In the meantime we are all going to have to live with the "churches" that WE have made and OUR SENSE of holiness and salvation for all.
It is my prayer that Christ will open our minds to His truth and dismiss ours.
God bless you...Amen

PS
I will check back on this blog in a few days.

ReplyDeleteI have no explanation for 'what' communion is at this time. I say that since the question you ask alone indicates that you are far from having what is needed and that you must be sure of and have unshakeable faith in order to connect which such an explanation.
Please do not take offense.
This is not to make you into some ignoramous or something. You were probably only being sarcastic anyway.
But you did ask what I thought communion is?
I can say that Communion is not understood on an individual or case by case basis; where each person has his own understanding of "what IT is". That would be "individualism". This concept is very new age, very liberal and very un-orthodox in Christian teaching. I would go so far to say NOT even close to christian teaching or thinking.
Remember I am learning to. I do not have the answers. I do get what IS NOT right within Christian faith on some things. I have learned early to learn my faith 'thoroughly' as possible. I have started by working backward. I find it quicker and clearer to grasp the things that are NOT correct and by process of elimination learn more about the truth. such as today too much secularism is painted into "christianity". My muslim neighbor appears more christian than me with his xmas trees and light and snowmen lit up during December (he says he only does it for the kids not religion).
I donot use these items to express my faith (that is my choice). Instead of buying my children toys and taking vacations like I used to I take them to visit orphanages, homeless shelters, the sick. I teach them to give to the poor in very creative ways. And most importantly to want nothing but to be able to care for others. These are enduring gifts filled with the real meaning of Christmas. We gave the Lenox silver and the Tiffany servung set away to charity. I can not beleive I was stuck in that lost world.
I am happy for how God has excluded me from the fun filled drunkeness of todays christmas and alot of other secularism.
I do not expect everybody to be like me. I just want to share my experience. Take it for what its worth.
However .....
I said all that to make a point. Which is the world and its cares have taken root in the church; the weeds of which has grown so high that the church can not be descerned other than as a "weed". And you and I know what we do with weeds. We Wackem!
I can thus understand what you say about the church. Wackem!!
But there is 'the church' behind all the over growth. And it is filled with the power and will of God in Jesus Name.
I am hoping that I have the time in my life to escape the lost world we are both in. I am cutting away at the "weeds" as best I can. But each time I cut another grows. Those around me think I am crazy. They say "the church is not necessary anymore, all you need is to love Christ". Sounds good to here. And I love Christ; I love His Church as well.
So...
I am going to keep cutting away.
I only offered a very small, very elementary points regarding why a person should not take communion.
If you really want to know you should ask your priest or deacon or if you do not have these then ask a friend or find it where you normally go to get the knowlegde and understanding you need...like an opinion poll or from a guru of some kind. I am being sarcaric here but I am trying to make a point without being nasty.
The point is if you do not need the church for salvation or anything else as you say; why don't you use the sources that you used to draw such life changing conclusions. You seem to have put alot of trust in your sources up to now.
Or may be Jesus Christ can give you the answer!!
I seems that you go and speak to him directly.
You did say that:
"Salvation is not through a church, or the fathers of a church, but through Jesus Christ".
Such a statement and belief is NOT christian at all and de-commissions you from the church established by Christ where he has placed His power on earth. This is true even if you are not in the church at all.
You have to believe that. If you do not than it matters not.
As I struggling christian I have no better life than you. I am eager to sin. I am a pityful person therefore. Anyone who is a sinner and lusts for life deserves pity. Our Lord teaches this. He had pity on the world. A world that did not want His pity just as you did not want mine.
Please know that we are all sinners and need to repent our sins. We all need pity therefore. This is Christian knowledge. Many people prefer some other thought.
Please take the pity I offered you and give it to me.
I need your pity and your prayers.
God Help us...Amen
