O Oriens

December 20

O Dayspring, Brightness of the everlasting light,
Son of justice, come to give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death!

Latin

O Oriens, splendor lucis æternæ, et sol justitiæ:
veni, et illumina sedentes in tenebris, et umbra mortis.

Isaiah 9:2

The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
those who lived in a land of deep darkness—
on them light has shined.

Antiphon sung by the Dominican student brothers at Oxford.

Text from Fish Eaters.

  1. Dear Grandmère Mimi,
    I have enjoyed the O Antiphons, and they are presented so beautifully that it's a real joy to click over here each day. Because of your thoughtful links I can spend as much or as little time as I have. It's been a real Advent Gift. Thank you.

  3. thank you for the O Antiphons, Grandmere Mimi. They are very reverent.

    It's a great way to meditate a little every day, although I don't always know what to say.
