Mystic Krewe Of Barkus

Since Lapin asked if my Diana had participated in the Krewe of Barkus parade in New Orleans, I thought I'd give you a view of the exciting event, even if Diana did not participate.

From the Times-Picayune:

In the French Quarter, crowds jammed sidewalks from Rampart to Jackson Square as the beloved pooch parade, the Mystic Krewe of Barkus, rolled to the theme "Indiana Bones and the Raiders of the Lost Bark." Before the parade, hundreds gathered for several hours at the pre-parade "Pawty," enjoying music, food and admiring costumed dogs and themed floats.

Diana, as a one-eyed dog, would be quite a novelty, don't you think? Of course, I would not want to exploit her for her difference. What about a one-eyed queen of the Mystic Krewe of Barkus? Diana and I can dream, can't we?

I so want to be there right now.

  2. Since she's a one-eyed dog, you could dress her as a pirate with a patch!

  3. It would have been fun to bring Bella down for that.

Maybe every city needs a Mystic Krewe of Barkus to organize Mardi Gras parades!

  4. Kirstin, I know.

Padre Mickey, yes! A one-eyed pirate girl with a patch. I wish I could PhotoShop a picture of Diana to see what she'd look like in her costume.

Dennis, you can put the parade of the Krewe of Barkus on your itinerary and bring Bella and D. down for the occasion. Tell D. to dress up, too.

  5. Sounds like a load of fun. Thanks for the post. I have friends with an adopted one-eyed dog, name of Romeo. He has lots of fur (Cousin Diana is short-haired, isn't she?) so they have his groomer train part of it over the eye socket in what you might term a Hitler-lick. Looks pretty cute on a dog.

  6. Oh my! How is that lovely Diana? I have not asked about her in awhile?!

She would make a great addition to any krewe!!

  7. Lapin, I'm sure it is fun. I've never been. It's a tradition that started after I moved away. Diana is short-haired, so there's no disguising that she has only one eye.

Fran, she is doing extremely well, as I believe her bad eye used to bother her some, plus, we don't have to do the eye drops any longer. If I can get my digital camera to upload pictures onto my computer, I will show you what a great cosmetic job the vet did. You'd never know there was an eye there, except, of course, that dogs usually have two eyes. The regular camera does not show detail well enough with her black hair.

  8. I can't wait for the photo, Grandmère. I know a little one-eyed dog here in Austin. I am hopelessly wrapped around her little paw.

Rowan says HI. He loves you, you know.

  9. Hi, Lindy. Give Rowan a hug for me. Maybe he can come in and be in the Barkus parade one day. He looks so handsome in his blue coat. I'm sure he would bow-wow everyone in a costume.

  10. I wanna go too! Maybe another year. I'd love to see it! Too bad it's very expensive to fly pets, and then the hotels don't want them either. Sigh.

  11. And you and your pet, too, RFSJ! We'll make it a party beyond the Barkus party, or "pawty", as the humans in New Orleans say.

  13. Lindy, search around. You may be able to find one. Rowan, wouldn't you like a more manly-looking crown?
