Off To The Magic Kingdom

Yes, peeps, tomorrow Grandpère and I are off to Walt Disney World with eight other family members. Don't laugh. It's a sacrificial trip for GP and me. My very own son would not take his children to Orlando without us. Since my daughter and her family were going, my son's two children wanted to go, too. Five cousins will be together. They're close in age, (two age groups) and they enjoy each other's company enormously. Whatever you think about the old folks going, it's a magical place for the children, and that's why we're doing it.

Actually the last time we were there, we had a pretty good time. We relaxed, ate well, sat by the pool, and generally enjoyed ourselves in a mild sort of way.

Before I leave, I'm turning on comments moderation until I get back, so no comments may appear until then. If I have the use of my son-in-law's laptop, comments may appear, and I may put in a word or two. We shall see.

We will have someone stay in our house while we are gone.

UPDATE: Au revoir, mes amis. Que Dieu vous benisse! Attendez! Soyez bon!

  1. Enjoy -- we like it as much as the kids - but they are a good excuse to go.

  2. Ann, thank you. I thought surely my first comment would be mocking.

  3. Yay! Another non-mocking comment. Thank ya, big Oyster.

  4. Way back when dinosaurs walked the earth and there was only Disneyland, my grandparents paid for a trip to said amusement park for my siblings and our cousins. We had a great time, changing cars and driving our parents nuts.

    Have fun!

  5. Kirstin, thank.

Padre Mickey, I am soooo looking forward to being driven nuts. We must fly into Tampa and rent two cars to make our way to Orlando. All the flights from New Orleans to Orlando were booked solid.

  6. Kirstin, that would be either "thanks" or "thank you".

  7. taking a car load of kids to Disney World. Yes, sounds about right for a Lenten discipline to me.

whatever you did to need to burn off such bad karma I hope that it works.

are you sure that you wouldn't just rather wear a hair shirt instead???

  8. Dennis, I loves dem anyway. I do like to see them enjoy one another's company. They are cute together. Only one girl in the mix, but she holds her own. She learned from her Mimi.

  9. Disney World is sooooo fun. Well, the lines aren't. But the rides are great. Do take in a few of the more sedate ones. The illusions they create are wonderful. I'm jealous. But I have too many 2008 travel plans to be seriously so.

    Prayers ascending for safe travel.

  10. Piskie, we do. The ones like the Safari ride. I took one of the wild rides last time around, but never again. My grandchildren were laughing at me, because I kept asking, "Is it almost over? Is it almost over?"

  11. Oh, and thanks for the prayers. I always welcome those.

  12. Having visited once, I now firmly believe that the Magic Kingdom is visual proof that the concept of Intelligent Design is empty and worthless.

  13. RR, you make a very good point. I'm busy adjusting my attitude to enjoying my self, no matter what. I just got off the phone with my hysterical granddaughter who was freaking because she thought we were staying a whole week, and we are not.

As Frank Costanza would say, "Serenity now. Serenity now."

  14. Prayers for your patience and strength, and that of the other adults; the kids'll be fine.

  15. I'd love to go. I've always dreamt of being arrested for assaulting Mickey Mouse. If you see him, just give him a quick slap for me.

  16. TheMe, you should be ashamed. Those poor workers in the costumes suffocate in the summer months. Even now, with the temps in the high 70sF and 26-27C, it's not exactly cool inside those things.

Instead, I'll give them regards from a "nice" Englishman.

  17. TheMe, once in a mall, I was holding my 4-year-old honorary niece on my shoulders. The Easter Bunny walked up to us, all friendly-like.

She punched him in the nose.

I couldn't chide her; I was laughing too hard. :-)

  19. Au revoir, Mimi... I like Orlando, there's lots to do besides visit the Magic Kingdom. And if you get too bored you and Grandpère can always drive down to Weeki Wachee and see that mermaid thing... Just trying to help.

  20. I'll be thinking of you, Mimi dear. And I know you will have tales to tell upon return. Here's wishing the little darlings are all tired out at the end of each day so you and Grandpère can get some good sleep at night...

  21. Sorry Grandmere, just one of those cultural icons that I can't abide. In fact disney output on the whole I find pretty revolting.

Hurrah for Kirstins neice who is obviously a child of discernment.
    Kirstin, have you read Hogfather?

  22. I, like the good Padre, made it to Disneyland as a child. In 1968, a trip from Seattle to the Magic Kingdom, at Christmas time was not as pedestrian as it is now. Of course, we drove. My dad truly did not want to go, but as you've indicated, Mimi, such trips can be sacrificial.

Here's hoping you had a blessed time!

  23. Mimi what am I to make of this? You may recall that I have another person in my life who shares your surname... And he was there too.

    Amazing coincidence?
    Disturbing parallel?
    Secret family connections?

    Oh my!

  24. We have one of those here in Yoorp. I have been a fair few times and I absolutely love it, even though they largely parlez Francaise.

Magic is magic whatever your age.

  25. Hope you're having a wonderful time in one of my favorite places!

  27. Oh, enjoy yourselves! Everyone welcomes the opportunity to be a child again, if only for a brief period, and Disneyland (World) is a great place to do so.

(The zoo is another....but watch out for the tigers!)

    Safe travel....

  28. Well, now that it's officially Lent, I hope you're out of that place, 'cuz it would be wrong to have that much fun during Lent.

  29. All you folks who love Disney, sorry I can't join in the love fest. It was lovely for the children, and that made it worth it. The food was excellent, too. Maybe if we'd take it easier, we'd do better.
