From The SC Of The Diocese of Western Louisiana

STATEMENT OF THE STANDING COMMITTEE DIOCESE OF WESTERN LOUISIANA
This 14th day of April, 2008.

We, the Standing Committee of the Diocese of Western Louisiana, make this statement that we do not recognize the depositions of Bishops Schofield and Cox as having had the requisite canonical votes necessary for the deposition of a bishop. We would refer the Church to the March 27, 2008 letter from the Standing Committee and Bishop of South Carolina to the Presiding Bishop, which we believe to be correct in its recitation of the applicable canons and their history.

This is not my diocese, although there has been talk of combining the two Louisiana dioceses into one. The territory of the Diocese of Western Louisiana comprises western and northern Louisiana.

  1. AFAIAC, they need to get a life and drop it. What has happened has happened. We weren't there, our bishops were there at least some of them, they decided as they decided and short of hauling the House back (at our expense) things won't change. As Jenny Te Paa said: We need to stop fussing about and with each other and get on with God's mission.

It's like the recall on a vote that is happening in our town by the usual malcontents. They didn't show up at town meeting day, missed the vote, didn't like its outcome and are only now raising questions they had ample time to do before town meeting. It costs $2000 a pop to have a revote and, frankly, I am at the point where I think the town should charge the people who signed the petition for the recall to pay for it.

    Grump.

  2. I have not heard that there is talk about combining the two dioceses. I'm not wild about the idea.

  3. Caminante, exactly. It's done. Let it go.

Ormonde, I believe that I saw the talk of combining the two online somewhere, but I don't remember where. It was a while ago. The reasoning had to do with saving the expense of having two dioceses, since the southeastern part of the state lost population after Katrina. I don't like the idea either. I hope it does not happen.

  4. As Caminante said, they need to get a life. I am sickened to think they would stand up for someone as abusive of God's people as Dave Schofield. God help us all.

  5. What's done is done - and was done following the precedent of previous, uncontested depositions. The only possible motivation for this action is to throw a spanner in the works. In hopes, perhaps, of fomenting trouble with a handful of aged, retired bishops when Duncan's case comes up for consideration?

  6. Lapin, you're probably right. They're looking to the future.

  7. The new-cons have become comical... except that it's all so serious.

  8. For me, life was better before Western La broke away from the Diocese of Louisiana.

I'm hopeful that if Western Louisiana continues in the schismatic direction that those of us who remain Episcopalian can return to being a part of the Diocese of Louisiana.

  9. Lindy, it is indeed all too serious, but I must laugh occasionally, or I will go crazy - although some may say I'm already there.

EPisc0pal0oza, I hear you, and I stand with you in your desire to remain Episcopal. I still have some concerns about the direction of the Diocese of Louisiana.
