From the Episcopal Diocese of San Joaquin:
Friday Reflection 5/30/08
Dear Friends,
I received great news three days ago from the office of the manager of the Lambeth Conference. The e-mail says "we are expecting you at the Lambeth Conference". I was wondering when the invitation would arrive or even, some days, if it would ever come to Jane and me. Well, it is here and we are making plans to attend. We attended the Conference in 1998 when I was the Bishop of Northern California.
I am pleased to be going, but I am more pleased because this a clear sign from the Anglican Communion that the Episcopal Diocese of San Joaquin is the only Anglican Diocese in all of inland Central California. I received this invitation because I am your Bishop and, therefore, entitled to attend the Lambeth Conference as the Bishop of the Diocese of San Joaquin recognized by the Archbishop of Canterbury.
We have much work left to do in bringing this Diocese back together. But, rejoice, sisters and brothers, your faithfulness has been recognized by the Archbishop of Canterbury and by the Anglican Communion.
Rejoice, again I say, rejoice.
In peace,
+Jerry A. Lamb
Bishop of San Joaquin
Thanks to Roger for the link.
Sorry, I don't really follow all these defections, etc. (Hangs head) From what I see on the web, he's really Episcopalian, not some reactionary who wants to shove people back in the closet, right?
ReplyDeleteIf so, this does sound like good news.
Doesn't exactly support the already pretty-well discredited claim by Presiding Bishop Venables that Williams pre-approved his North American incursions. Politically, of course, it will help Williams smooth over the problem with TEC caused by his refusal to invite Gene Robinson. Carrot and stick time. But he has done the right thing on this. It will certainly not help the claim of groups like CANA that they are legitimate units within the Anglican Communion.
ReplyDeleteCool beans! Thanks for this update, Mimi. As ever, you are a jump ahead of me.
ReplyDeleteRuth, the former bishop of the Diocese of San Joaquin, John-David Schofield left the Episcopal Church to join the Archdiocese of the Southern Cone in South America and was subsequently deposed by the Episcopal House of Bishops. Bishop Lamb was appointed as interim bishop until the diocese elects a new bishop. It is, indeed, good news that he has been invited to Lambeth and is recognized by the Archbishop of Canterbury as the one true bishop of the diocese.
ReplyDeleteThe story of the SJ diocese and Bishop Schofield is long, with many twists and turns. If I find it in one place, I will post a link.
Paul, scooped ya, huh? Thanks to my trusty stringer, Roger.
ReplyDeleteWhomever; it's good news, as Bishop Lamb says, even with CwazyWabbit's astute annotation.
ReplyDeleteI'm happy to be an Episcopalian, but, except for the Diocese of Worchester, I'm not so sure about the C of E. Must we acknowledge them? I mean the leaders--the GT and that lot.
Oh, poo; I thought that didn't look right: Wenchoster. Bishop Wodewick.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Mimi, for the explanation.
ReplyDeleteYes, Johnieb, it's WENCHoster, but the good bishop prefers to be addressed as Bishop Codpiecium.
ReplyDeleteRuth, I'm pleased to help.
"indeed, good news that he has been invited to Lambeth and is recognized by the Archbishop of Canterbury as the one true bishop of the diocese."
ReplyDeleteI hope this also means that he recognizes the Episcopal Diocese of San Joaquin as the one true diocese.
It will be more than interesting to see if the former bishop will be dis-invited
Amen and amen...
ReplyDeleteIt will be more than interesting to see if the former bishop will be dis-invited
ReplyDeleteSusan, indeed! I wondered about that, too.
Blissings on the darsis of San Joaquin, the hisband of the mother of Our Lady, mother of Our Lawd! I look forward to gritting the bishop at the Limbeth Conference, end perhaps spinding tame in prar with the rateful leader of Episcopal-i-ans in thet Celifawnian place. May he be blissed with wisdom, courage end fortitude, end be strong in the faith agin those who pritch divers-i-ons.
ReplyDelete+Bishop Codpiecium! I'm honored, and, at the same time, humbled by your visit to my wee blog. You are the first bishop to leave a comment. I know of one other bishop who visits, but he has never left a word.
ReplyDeleteI hope that you and Bishop Lamb have the opportunity to pray together. Who knows? You may be assigned to the same listening/prayer group. I wish you a lovely time at Lambeth, er, Limbeth.
Mimi, has + Clumber never made a comment here?
ReplyDeleteSusan! Another mistake! My blog reputation is ruined! I forgot about +Clumber, the canine bishop. I hope that he never reads my comment, because his feelings will be terribly hurt. He will hang his head and his tail and slink off into a corner until he recovers. His mitre might even fall off.
