For The Latest On Gustav

Instead of loading and reloading pictures, I'll link to the Weather Underground site for information on Gustav. For those of you who are interested, in Text Information, the "Public Advisory" and the "Discussion" sections are helpful. Then, I look at the pictures labeled "Tracking", "5 day forecast", and "Computer models". Scroll down to see the big picture after you click.

I put a link to the site on the sidebar below Of Course I Could Be On Vacation.

  1. You must be exceedingly worried. We're all rooting for you. You sure you don't want us to take a stab at the Pat Robertson Option?

  2. Lapin, is that like giving the demons permission to go into the pigs???

  3. Mimi,
My niece and her family live in Houma. She went to buy gas today and she said one station had raised their prices 90 cents per gallon. I told her to call the AG's office and report it. Of course, she didn't buy her gas there.
My daughter in law left up here this afternoon (she works for Louisiana probation & parole). They are all going south to evacuate prisoners.
They have prisoner volunteers from the Caddo Parish prison readying LSU-Sheveport and other shelter sites.

  4. Lapin, as I said in a comment below, I am a wreck. I'd like to say I'm cool and calm, but I'm not. I don't fear for our personal safety, but I worry about coming home to a ruined house.

Jim, it's despicable to take advantage of people in times of trouble. I hope your niece does report them to the AG. Yesterday, Grandpère filled up our vehicles and bought gas for the generator, in case we return home (if we have a home) to no power. At least, we will have refrigeration and a light or two. We can't leave the generator on at night, because everyone has their windows open, and the noise is so loud that no one around could sleep.

Is there a herd of swine around?

  5. oh man... prayers for all. this is so troubling. are you leaving?

oh i so hope so. and i hope that everyone leaving also takes all their animals.

Prayers with you and all. Be safe. Take no chances.

  6. Cany, don't worry. We're taking our animals. My daughter will be carrying two dogs, one cat, and four chickens. It should be an interesting ride.

  7. I am lighting a bonfire for you. Consider that the eight-day votive (which I lit yesterday) will burn for your well-being and that your house will be spared.

And good luck with the animal fowl ride.

Maybe your fleur de lis will bring you luck.

  8. Here is a link to The Times relating to preparations for evacuees.

  9. We'll light votives in front of our Virgin of Gudalupe for you...she's lovely and surrounded by Bonsi's...easy does it, be as gentle as you can be with you and yours...we'll be here for you all the way through.

  10. Chickens? That's absolutely fabulous.

More seriously, I am now officially taking up the candle-lighting routine, for you grandmere and everyone else, too.

You heard it here first - my intuition tells me, whatever its strength, it's going significantly east of you.

    :), the prognosticator,

  11. Prayers go up for the safety of everyone on the Gulf coast.

  12. Jim, it sounds as if y'all are getting ready for a flood of evacuees up Nawth.

I love the sacramentals, as we called them in my days in the RCC, the bonfires, the candles, the votives. They help. In some way, they're quite reassuring, especially those that have to do with light. Thank you all.

Scott, my daughter said that she wants you to fly down and take the ride with her and care for the chickens while she drives.

East of the sun and west of the moon is where I'd like to see the storm go. My son says significantly west of us. His reasons sound like readings from a crystal ball. We shall see.

  13. OK, candles it is -- and this doesn't come easily for a former Congregationalist (think UCC).

    Be well and unafraid.

  14. grandmere,

    you have a prognosticating son?

    :)

Please tell your daughter, if I had time left, I sure would! My mom caught lice from chickens in Kansas when she was a child, and she never forgot it, because she got a kerosene wash as a result.

    :)

  17. silly silly me, I finally "got it". Either your daughter or your son lives in or near Baton Rouge.

How great is that?! (One of these days I'll tell you the story of how my parents won a trip to Ft. Lauderdale, and how I insisted on stopping at every reptile farm along the way - or how maybe my dearest soulmate in high school married a very famous NOLA restaurant.)

    :)

  18. Mimi, I predict this storm will hit about 100 miles west of Lafayette. There's plenty of unoccupied land there and maybe I'd get some rain out of it. What I do know is that you and yours will be held in the palm of God's hand.

  19. Rumors are now flying that the Republicans may postpone their convention in St. Paul if Gustav hits the Gulf Coast on Monday. There are also complaints that FEMA is no more ready for this hurricane than it was for Katrina, especially in the area of emergency housing.

The BBC's Justin Webb said that there was a small group of right-wing fundamentalists praying for rain on Obama's speech in Denver. He reports that instead, the weather was very beautiful and wonders if God is not a Republican as has been reported for the last 30 years, but a Democrat. If so, then someone else is sending those hurricanes to "punish" NOLA, and Pat Robertson won't be much help.

  20. Hello Holyfoolishness. Welcome. Your icon-gravatar is lovely. Julian's words are often a great comfort.

Thanks all for the prayers and offerings that bring light. Trust me; they are helping.

Scott, no. Neither my son nor my daughter live in or near Baton Rouge. My daughter lives in a suburb of New Orleans. One son lives here in Thibodaux, and the other lives south of us in Houma.

Our place of refuge during storms is in New Roads, about 35 miles northwest of Baton Rouge, a small farm where Grandpère grew up.

I remember the snake farm on the road between BR and NO. I thought it a creepy place, and I never had the least desire to stop for a visit, not even as a child.

Was it a Brennan whom your soulmate married?

TheJanet, one track has Gustav skirting the coast of Louisiana and making landfall in the western part of the state.

Counterlight, will anyone care when the Republicans have their convention? Word is that they're still trying to give away a number of the 12,000 seats in the venue for McWorse's acceptance speeh.

    ReplyDelete
  21. My! I hadn't heard that one. What a contrast between a packed 57,0000 seat football stadium and being unable to fill 12000 seats even by giving away seats!
