David, I've wanted to ask. Have gas prices risen as rapidly in Europe in the last couple of years as in the US? The price is down a bit now, but I don't expect that it will stay down.
Of course, the difference in price in the US and Europe is from taxes. I feel sorry for the poor amongst us, who were already in a financial bind. The quick rise hits them hard, and, with the exception of a few large cities, we are not renowned for our public transportation system.
I checked our prices, and they range from $3.70 to over $4.00. Are you paying $12.00 or close to that in the UK?
Out here in SoCal, we seem to be settling down around $4.20-$4.50, but this summer I have seen prices over $5/gallon in some parts of the state.
Yes, folks, you read that right. And not just rural parts (although it was a remote place in Eastern CA where I saw $5.19). On my way to AZ on the interstate (inAZ gas is cheaper than CA but that's not why I was going there) I had to pay $4.99, back in June.
As a driver of a Jeep (it is the only way to get around in the snow)I always feel somehow dissed at these cartoons. I just wish that there was an economical 4x4 out there.
WE, I believe that one was in the group that Doug sent me, but this is not an all-cartoon blog, so I must pick and choose. Doug sends me more material than I use, but he seems not to be offended that I don't use all of it.
IT, the highs were around $4.77 at the site I checked, so I would not doubt the price that you name.
Aw, Muthah+, I don't mean to offend anyone. Some folks need the 4x4 vehicles. Perhaps there's a fuel efficient 4x4 in your future. I hope so. The foolish ones are those driving alone in their hulks in the cities.
Mimi, just read Friedman's latest NYT column and remembered your ask Fr David about UK gas prices. I don't know if they're really $12, but Friedman wrote that they are idneed $10 in Denmark.
WE, I read Tom Friedman's column about what Greenland and Denmark have done to address the energy crunch, and they shame us. A hyperlink to the column is here.
They are small countries, but surely some of their solutions are adaptable to our country. I like the toilet with gears. That should get you over there reading.
They are all funny, but I love the second one especially.
ReplyDeleteYou think gas prices are a joke in the US? They're 3 times higher in UK!

Yes grandmere mimi. We pay around $12 dollars a gallon, most of which is in taxes. It makes life very expensive

About $6 per gallon in Australia. Was higher a few weeks ago.
