McCain - A Miserable 20 Out Of 100 Rating

The Disabled American Veterans organization rates the members of Congress according to their votes to support veterans with disabilities:

Formed in 1920 and chartered by Congress in 1932, the million-member DAV is the official voice of America's service-connected disabled veterans -- a strong, insistent voice that represents all of America's 2.1 million disabled veterans, their families and survivors.

The votes listed under the Key Votes section of the DAV web site are recorded roll call votes. They are related to important issues, such as:

* Budget
* Appropriations
* Amendments to increase funding
* Emergency supplemental funding for VA

In most cases, with recorded votes, we have notified members of Congress of what our position is, how we wanted them to vote, and why.

The group rates McCain at a miserable 20 out of 100 in his votes in support of disabled veterans. Obama scores 80 out of 100.

For all the blah, blah, blah about patriotism, McCain doesn't put the money we give him where his mouth is.

H/T to Lapin.

UPDATE: From the comments:

Checking the full list I see that McCain is one of only TWO members of Congress (both houses) to bottom out with a 20% D.A.V. rating.

The other is Larry Craig.

Ha! Good to see that McCain keeps the right company.

  2. The roll-call is also enlightening for its overview of the support that members of Congress as a whole give to Veterans. Most Democrats have a 100% rating; few, if any, Republicans do. In our SC delegation, both Democratic congressmen score 100%. The lowest score, 40%, is awarded to McCain sidekick (and confirmed bachelor) Lindsay Graham, who frequently proclaims his own military background - USAF 1982-88; colonel, AF Reserves, 2004. Unlike most active-duty military reservists, Senator Graham has been fortunate in that his recent tours of duty have been slight and light (April 2007 and two weeks in August 2007, "where he worked on detainee and rule-of-law issues").

  3. Except for anything that benefits the rich and corporations, Republicans are a stingy bunch, "the party of shriveled hearts", as spoken by a conservative. See sidebar.

  8. A series of recent posts on the blog of prominent gay commentator Michelangelo Signorile indicate that a long-time aide and current chief of staff to John McCain is a very lightly-closeted gay.

    Couldn't make this stuff up, could you?

  12. Lapin, why is it unbelievable? There's such a long string of them, that we should come to think of it as the norm.

  13. Anyone who might have encountered a partnered, "out", gay Republican who destroyed McCain's 2000 presidential hopes in the South Carolina primary, through some very dirty tricks indeed, has a head's start on me in learning what these people people are capable of, Mimi.

    As to dirty tricks, the next 30 days are going to show that we ain't seen nothing yet.

  14. Lapin, indeed! I might have encountered just such a person as you describe.
