Read Frank Rich in the New York Times, who opines that Obama will not disinvite Warren, nor will Warren step away from the podium of his own accord.
When Obama defends Warren’s words by calling them an example of the “wide range of viewpoints” in a “diverse and noisy and opinionated” America, he is being too cute by half. He knows full well that a “viewpoint” defaming any minority group by linking it to sexual crimes like pedophilia is unacceptable.
Yes. But Pastor Rick won't go. And there you have it.
I've gone back and forth about whether to post this in all its futility. It's not as though Obama and his staff are waiting for me to speak before they make their final, final, final decision. Nevertheless, here's my last hurrah on the subject, FWIW.
Oh, I hope it's not your last post. Head on over to FranIAm or Quaker Dan or my site and consider posting your own link to "Alternative Invocation."
ReplyDeleteBetter yet, Mimi, write your own invocation and post it for us.
Finally, an answer to a prayer . . .as it were.
Elizabeth, I've read all of the posts that you recommend, and, as of now, I am not yet comfortable with the concept of alternative prayers. I expect that Pastor Rick's prayer will be perfectly acceptable. The idea of alternative prayers seems too much like a prayer competition to me.
ReplyDeleteSince I am now exploring the riches in the Book of Common Prayer, my plan for Inauguration Day is to post a prayer from the BCP as a supplement to, not as an alternative to, the prayers in the ceremony.
It's hard to take a position that's different from so many of my friends, but I must do what feels right for me.
I am grateful for friends like you, Mimi, who have the good sense and integrity to do what feels right for themselves. Makes for few regrets.
ReplyDeletePaul, thanks. That means a lot to me.
ReplyDeleteWell of course he's the wrong guy for the job, and should somehow find that he's come down with some rare malady that precludes his attendance, whereupon someone with good common sense could step in. I nominate +airedale.

Don´t be silly, this guy doesn´t know from gracious other than to strip his Churchsite of anti-lgbt trash!
What a guy...I still don´t think Obama knew the depth of this guys sleeziness...afterall, Obama listened to Reverend Wright for 20 years until he noticed, or was informed, something was amiss in his Churchgoing paradise.
I'd have much preferred the Rev. Wright. I liked him.
