Reminds me of the song "Les haricots sont pas salé." (In Louisiana Creole, "les haricots" is pronounced "zydeco," the name of a certain style of music and dancing.) In other words, the snap beans are not salty because we're too poor to cook them with salted pork. And that's the miserable state of Louisiana.
Although The Advocate is published in Baton Rouge, folks from north Louisiana read the newspaper. I'd wager that someone from north Louisiana sent that quote in to Smiley.
