Afternoon At The Movies

This afternoon, my grandchildren and I went to see "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian". The movie was good fun, delightful, really, a movie for all ages. Our ages are 9, 13, and 74. I wondered about the years in between and asked my granddaughter if she thought her dad would enjoy the movie. She said, "Oh, yes. He would."

The cost of going to the movies continues to surprise me - $40.50 for the three of us, including items from the concession stand, and admission prices here are not nearly as high as in some areas.

The children went back to their mom's house today, and I will miss them, but at the same time, I'll enjoy the time off from being a part-time mom for a week.

  2. As the Two Auntees, we are allowed to watch some of the children who are part of our small congregation. We have recently accompanied brother and sister to see Disney's Monsters and Aliens in 3D which is awesome in itself. Much better than the 3D of old. This week, we hosted a "girls" day out with two girls 4 & 5 years, as the youngest girls will be moving to Michigan later this month. After a lunch, we took the girls to see "UP", which I thought was a little 'dark' for smaller children and it almost brought me to tears, however the quality of the 3D was excellent. The youngest child climbed on Kay's lap 30 min. into the movie and later became frightened enough that they had to leave and wait in the lobby for us. As I am not allowed to see my grandchildren, I cherish these outings and visit that come to us as very special indeed.

  3. Mimi, here's some Thibodaux nostalgia. Back when I was a youngster, there were two movie houses in town, the Grand and the Baby Grand. For kids, the Grand cost a dime and the Baby Grand a nickel. Every Saturday we went to one of the two.

  4. I think it was a quarter when I was a kid. Mimi, don't they have matinee prices anymore? I haven't been to a movie theater in years.

  5. Sarah, my heart breaks for you that you can't see your grandchildren. I understand why it means so much to you to have the experience of enjoying good times with your young friends.

Ormonde, the Grand was still open when we first moved to Thibodaux 40 years ago. In my childhooe, our movies cost the odd sum of 12 cents. A quarter covered it all, including a nickle for popcorn, and a nickle for a Coke or a Hershey bar. We went three time a week, Friday nights for a cowboy movie, Saturday nights for a horror movie, and Sunday afternoons for the movies with the big-name movie stars. One might say that we grew up at the movies.

Susan, the matinée price yesterday was $4.50 for everyone, children, seniors, whoever. It's the concessions that get you. And then there are the game rooms, but my grandson finally stopped asking, after a succession of, "Sorry, no. You have games at home."

  6. EGADS, MIMI! $20.00 for "food". That's totally outrageous.

  7. Susan, that would be $27.00 for junk, and that was with a coupon for a free small bag of popcorn for me.

  8. Sorry, Mimi. My multiplication skills were screwy there for a while. That's even worse! Out here in Berkeley, folks go to the Walgreen store(no not the Walmart) and load up on those boxes of licorice sticks, black and red and maybe a cadbury big bar, stick it in their purse and smuggle it in. CocaCola is unsmuggleable, but I have seen folks open those huge purses and pull out popcorn too.

  9. Susan, I'd need a tote bag. My daughter does it. I don't go to the movies that often with a crew, so I don't plan ahead. I carry a small bottle of water in my purse, so I don't usually buy a drink.

  10. My goodness going to the movies is expensive. I haven't been to a theater since 1984 in Minneapolis.

First there was VHS then DVD, ...it's cheaper to watch at home, and I can smoke, drink, eat, or make a complete ass of myself if I wish.

Not to mention the cost of gas to get to the theater, and the aggravation of the idiots who pretend to know how to drive down here in FL.

  11. David G., of course, you're very right. I know all that you say, except for the smoking.

However, since I almost literally grew up at the movies, I still appreciate the mystique of the dark, quiet theater, with all attention focused on the big screen. The kids enjoy it from time to time, too. One might say that it's a treat for all of us. I think treats are okay from time to time.

  12. Oh I know that Mimi, ...I'm a movie buff myself ... , but I've always lived where movie houses where 40 miles away at least. So that is where I am coming from.

  13. We're about 17 miles away, David, and lucky to have a theater that close here in the backwater.
