Health Care Is A Moral Issue

It's time that people of faith weighed in on the issue of health care reform.

H/T to The Lead for the link to the video and for further information on what faith groups are doing to support passage of the reform bill.

Regarding discussions on health care reform, the first of my bêtes noires is the folks on Medicare who don't want the feds involved in health care AT ALL. Somewhere along the way they missed the memo that Medicare is a "socialistic", government-run health care plan.

My next bête noire is the folks who like their Medicare health care plan and know that it's run by the feds, but who don't want others to have what they have, because the feds will SURELY FAIL in other efforts to provide health care.

My third bête noire is the members of the US Congress who are comfortable in their "socialistic", government-run health care, but who just WILL NOT SHARE. Why can't all citizens have what they have?

  1. Grandmere, you and I are on the same page with this one, although I'm taking it from the angle of the person who has no health insurance amazed by the fear coming from those who do.
Is it such a precious commodity that to share it would mean the collapse of society??
Looking at Scripture, did not ALL get fed exactly what they needed at the feeding of the five thousand?
And since when has an executive at Blue Cross/Blue Shield cared one iota for the customer? As long as they get money rolling in from healthy people, and find ways to deny claims to unhealthy people, they're sittin' pretty.
Off the soap box to keep reading.

  2. SCG, I am sorry. Way too many folks are in the same situation as you, and that's not right. It's a shame and a disgrace that the richest country in the world does not provide health care for all of its citizens.

The health insurance companies are making huge profits right now, and the CEOs are getting huge bonuses on the backs of sick people, while excluding those with preexisting conditions and dumping their clients who have the misfortune to get sick. Why are these same companies dictating who can have health care?

  3. sorry about victor.

but thanks for the great post!

I'm kind of disheartened right now, but I don't want to give up hope. just saw a parish member's facebook quiz, voted "No" on the Universal Healthcare quiz.

And I wanted to get in an argument with her!

  4. Victor is now in Spam Land.

Diane, I don't understand it. Sometimes I feel really down about the future of our country. I'm losing hope that a decent health care bill will be passed, but I won't give up the fight until it's over.

  5. I have good health insurance AND I want everyone to the same. I have worked in providing health care through our state public health system. When people would need health care beyond what we could provide, I had to try to find health care providers for them..........not always easy.

NO ONE should have to face cancer or other serious health concerns and worry about how to pay for it. Health care should be right not a privilege for a few.

What most people do not realize is that we pay exhorbitantly for people who have not received appropriate health care and become disabled as a result. Providing good, preventive health care for everyone would be much cheaper in the long run (for those interested in the profit aspect).

Profit has no place in a health care system!!! People providing health care should receive adequate compensation for their services, the cost of treatment, research, etc. must be paid for. All the CEOs, bean counters and people with no medical background making medical decisions should be taken out of our medical system immediately!!

I, too, have seen friends vote "NO" on Facebook for universal health care. I wonder if they have ever had to tell someone they have a serious health problem and need health care immediately and there are no resources. I have had that experience. I wish that more people could have that experience. It would change their hearts and minds.

  6. Let's stop fooling around. The opposition to health care reform is nothing but RACISM. Those who have insurance---disproportionally white---do not want to help 'pay' for those who do not have health insurance---disproportionally people of color.

It's the same reason that so many whites hate any type of welfare program---unless it helps whites.

All this other silliness about the deficit is just cover. Look at the people who disrupt---do you think they really know anyything about the national debt, deficits etc. Of course not. Do these 'shouters'at the forums have any idea about 'socialism'as they drive to the forum on 'government' built highways and streets?

No, my friends, it is all about race. Claude

  7. My middle son and his family are without health insurance as is my youngest (28 years) who is back home because of losing his job in Florida. Both have tried finding employment.

  8. Ciss B, many people do not realize that some life changes will cause them to no longer have health insurance. It could happen to anyone. Even those against universal health care.

Your family is in my prayers.

  9. Two Auntees, we often do not do what is in our own best interests. What about the high cost of ER care for folks who could have been saved from an emergency situation if they'd had access to primary care?

Claude, racism is indeed part of the picture, but not all. And I know folks who think Obama is the devil incarnate, and it's because of his race, although they deny it. Many folks in the country don't care at all about the poor, no matter their color, because they blame them for not pulling themselves out of poverty, even if, in most cases, it's not possible.

Ciss, it's tragic enough to lose employment but to lose access to health care on top of that is outrageous. I will pray for your family, too.

  10. Preachers should keep politics out of the pulpit.
There's a separation of church and state for a reason.
