My granddaughter is pretty much recovered from the swine flu, but she must stay out of school for this week. She had a fairly light case. She felt really sick for only two days and is taking Tamiflu. In the Advocate I read that "The U. S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that the swine flue outbreak in Louisiana is considered 'widespread'". The outbreak preceded the arrival of the vaccine. However, the disease is not to be taken lightly, as the Advocate also reports:
State health officials say a man from the Houma/Thibodaux area is the eighth person to die in Louisiana from complications related to swine flu.
My grandson Piers caught the flu at camp this summer. They gave him Tamiflu, and he was out of bed in two days.
ReplyDeleteMy GD has been out of bed for several days, but the rule for school is one week out.
ReplyDeleteThat is wonderful news. Glad your granchildren, Mimi and Ormonde, are OK.
ReplyDeleteI read that people over 60 may have limited immunity to swine flu from a flu strain from many years ago.
ReplyDeleteOh Grandmere --I missed this news! I hope and pray your GD continues to improve.
ReplyDeleteI am glad to hear that your granddaughter is doing so well.
ReplyDeletePraise God that your granddaughter is doing well! Prayers for the rest of your community and the world.
ReplyDeleteThanks all. If it wasn't for the rule about staying home for a week, she was feeling well enough to go to school today.
ReplyDeleteYes, thankful your GD has recovered. Here in Australia, now that the flu season is ending, a vaccine is to start being rolled out before the end of the month with enough vaccine for every person in the country although apparently most people like your GD have only had mild attacks and as you say, those of us who are older seem to be less susceptible.
ReplyDeleteYes, I have not been keeping up apparently. Glad your granddaughter is better.
ReplyDeleteI went to get my flu shots 2 weeks ago and my Doctor said that the doctor in her office who was seeing all the people with flu like symptoms said that even though some people she saw who were born before 1957 tested positive for the H1N1 flu, their symptoms were much less severe and they recommended that we older folks should not fear it or indeed have the vaccine. So I thought one less shot was a good thing.
Part of the sickness could have been due to the Tamiflu. The side effects of Tamiflu are often worse than the flu itself. And while the drug reduces the duration of the illness by about a day or so, it rarely reduces the strength of the symptoms.
ReplyDeleteIn the UK, doctors are now talking of giving Tamiflu only to young children, people with diabetes and respiratory problems, and people with a compromised immune system.
As for the vaccine we're supposed to be getting soon - nothing in the world would make me allow my children to be vaccinated with a product that has only been tested for a few weeks!
Thanks for the good words, everyone.
ReplyDeleteI will take the regular flu shot, but not the swine flu shot, even when it's available for folks my age.
Erika, my GD has not had side effects from Tamiflu. Today is her final day to take the medication.
Glad the news is good. Poor her though. It can't have been much fun.
ReplyDeleteMimi, I have been on the road and off the blogs, so sorry that I missed this.
ReplyDeleteGlad that she is feeling better and that she did not have side effects from Tamiflu!
