Worn out!
After rising before dawn, I had a looong day, which I'll tell you about tomorrow. With what's left of the day, I'm watching my new DVD of "Brideshead Revisited" once again. It is gorgeous, with impeccable performances by the actors, beautiful settings, and wonderful cinematography. The visual quality of the DVD version far surpasses my original videorecordings, which I've watched so many times.

Oh I love Brideshead!!!
ReplyDeleteOh Fran, I do too. The producers of the series must have spent a fortune making it. I just watched the hunt from which Sebastian strayed to have a few at the pub. What a spectacle.
ReplyDeleteThis production is delicious! Got it from Netflix recently.
ReplyDeleteI watched the series when it first came out on PBS. That must be 25 years ago. Almost fell in love with the English aristocracy. Did fall in love with Castle Howard ("Brideshead") up in Yorkshire in Madpriest's general vicinity. Loved the episode where they went arm and arm to Venice. What a gay fantasy!
ReplyDelete"Keeping Up Appearances" made me reconsider my early affection for English nobility. Hyacinthe Bucket ("Bouquet!") was always longing for the distinguished company of titled dolts and boors for her candlelight suppers.
I love the book, and I love the BBC drama. I've read the book several times, and each time I watch the series, I want to read the book again
ReplyDeleteGrandpère still loves "Are You Being Served?" It's funny, but I can't watch it over and over as he does.
Sigh. I really must get the DVD, as my VCR tapes are old and rickety. And a new copy of the book, since I wore mine into pieces.
ReplyDeleteI once read (I don't think I imagined it, but who knows) Umberto Ecco say that this is the book that made him want to be a writer.
Alice, you won't be disappointed if you buy the DVD. It is visually stunning.
ReplyDeleteLordy! They were so young!
ReplyDeleteSusan, they were. But with the new clarity in the DVD, both Andrews and Irons look a tad too old to be Oxford undergraduates.
ReplyDeleteGood grief! I looked them up. The two men were both 33 years old. Of course, they aged in the story.
I think the original series was very successful.
ReplyDeleteThey moved a lot of scenes around, but preserved the book through another medium, which isn't that easy...
Just great. And the musick... and the melancholy ;=)
