Chris Wood - "Cold, Haily, Windy Night"

Chris Wood performing at the Dent Folk Festival.

Tim Chesterton, at To See And To Follow, posted the video, and I liked it, and I stole it. Tim stole it from YouTube, and I thought it would be all right to steal from a thief.

Chris plays nice guitar, doesn't he, and I like his singing, too. The old folk song is a bit naughty. Enjoy!

  1. Margaret, I'm teasing Tim, who is a priest and an evengelical (but a nice one!). Wait! You're a priest, too. However did I end up hanging out with so many priests?

  2. I have the feeling it's because you might have been one of us had you joined ECUSA a bit earlier.

  3. Another one!

Amelia, thank you for the compliment, but I don't see how I could ever have been a good priest. I'm too scatterbrained, disorganized, and one-track minded, just for starters. Priests need to be able to juggle many objects at one time.

  4. Traditional folk songs often deal with this sort of theme. Perhaps I lead a sort of double life, because I really love these songs. Like the Bible, they tell real stories of the things that people do without trying to whitewash them.

THere are actually two known tunes to this song. An old Irish band called Planxty did it to a much bouncier tune, but I think I like the one Chris does better.

By the way, the Mad One knows Chris Wood. Apparently he teaches in the folk music program at Newcastle University.

  5. This is true, although it is Mrs MadPriest who works with him.

He isn't the easiest person to get along with. He's a bit gruff.

  6. Tim, I love the songs, too. You can't tell a good story and leave out the earthy parts. You don't lead a double life. You're human, a man of many parts, and a fine musician yourself.

Hmmm. Is it the air in Newcastle, MadPriest?

  7. I'm not gruff. You only think I am because I'm the only person in the world who doesn't take any of your nonsense!
