Michelangelo's Pietà
Counterlight begins a series of posts on St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. He hasn't yet come to Michelangelo's Pietà, but I thought I'd take a sneak preview. The sculpture is beautiful almost beyond human capacity to imagine. I could not look at it long enough and had to finally tear myself away. The work is breathtaking in the literal sense of the word.
I'm eagerly anticipating Doug's future posts on St. Peter's. His blog is like a free university class by a distinguished professor, and I'm most thankful for his time and efforts and the wonderful results.

Every time I see something on the Basilica I am enthralled with art and the faith centered meaning for all that is prominent there!
ReplyDeleteThis is a beautiful picture of an exquisite piece.
I love Doug and his Art History classes too (it´s not just a sexual orientation thingie afterall, what a relief to know I´m not being biased)...so much to see a whole world of art adventure just in St. Peters (and the whole Vatican).
ReplyDeleteWatch for Doug's posts, Ciss. He does a great job.
ReplyDeleteLen, good grief, no! He's good.
Grandmere --you are so lucky that he does posts in your honor --the one on 'looking' yesterday was fabulous! He is the best!
ReplyDeleteDo you have favorites that he knows of that he is working on for you?
Margaret, believe me, I know how lucky I am. I think Doug knows that I like Vermeer, and he may know that I love Madonnas. Still, it's a lovely gesture on his part. Wouldn't you love to sit in on one of his classes?
ReplyDeleteOn my one and only trip to Rome some 30 years ago someone gave me the good advice to get to St. Peter's very early in the morning, before the tour buses arrive. So at 7 a.m. I walked into the huge basillica, with the hum of masses being said in the many side chapels. Then I glanced to my right and there it was...the Pieta in all its pre-plexiglass splendor. I literally gasped at the sight. It is so incredibly beautiful; the image is emblazoned on my memeory.

ReplyDeleteHolly, I know exactly what you mean. I've seen the sculpture twice, and the second time, the experience was even more intense. I did not want to leave.
