Why The Fuss Over Sarah Palin?

Why do you media folks give Sarah Palin air time? I thought she was done, over, finished. I'm talking to you, so-called liberal media. Stuff is happening out there. Why waste your limited time between the many long commercials on Sarah? Is it her new book? The book is selling at half price already, and it's just out.

  2. I don't understand it either and it isn't getting any of my blogspace. (maybe - unless something really juicy comes out)

  3. I can't step in our (only) bookstore for seeing her and that other grinning monkey, Glenn Beck.

    Books A Million sucks.

  4. Why pay half price when you can get it for free?

  5. Ratings.

She's the darling of the teabaggers.

And then there's the morbid fascination factor. Watching Palin is like watching a train wreck.

Personally, I'd rather listen to a symphony of blackboards being scratched than listen to her.

Can you imagine having to wake up to that voice every day? [shudder]

  6.      I agree with Mike. There's a grisly accident scene attraction about her. I found myself sucked in to a few minutes of the interview with Barbara Walters. I was just sitting there, mouth open, repeating, "Oh my God! This can't be real. This woman is a cartoon of herself." It wasn't until I realized ten minutes later what I was watching that I tore myself away screaming, "My eyes! My eyes!" It was just too painful to continue despite my prurient urge to keep watching the carnage.

  7. Mrs. Palin is in the position Mr. Nixon held for a while. Yes, she lost but not by all that much (liberals take note!) on a total votes basis. And she is still articulating (if that is the word) ideas that many right wing folks think.

The quiet but definite growth in the 'militia movement' and the ongoing surge in the sale of small arms ammo (Boxes of 9mm are rationed at a local Wal-Mart!) should tels us something. A fairly large percentage of our people think of themselves as an endangered and persecuted minority. For all of David Letterman's sarcasm about her shooting and hunting, those folks see her as one of them who is 'speaking out.'

I do not see her as a seriouis threat to Mr. Obama's reelection. But some people, a lot of them, at least wish she were. I think she is a potent symbol and it is likely the Republicans will have to nominate someone who holds a number of views she thinks important.

In sum, I guess I get the reasons for the coverage. Besides don't you want to keep an eye on the opposition?

  8. Well, Paul (A.), why pay, indeed?

There is the train wreck element, but I don't believe that a news show with any claim to seriousness should give Sara that much air time. I think when the news people show her and ridicule her, they fire up those who think of themselves as the "endangered (and armed!) minority", and they don't need firing up.

  9. I think you're right, Mimi. The media is just playing into a very sick game. She's an attention-seeking troll, and the media people just can't keep away.

Even watching them ridicule her became boring months and months ago.

  10. We need to give Sarah Palin the attention she deserves. NONE. There is nothing newsworthy about her. Her opinion is no more informed than any other far right wing person and is certainly not new. She and the media attention she receives does tend to fire up those who feel endangered by the changes in our culture.

  11. It occurred to me just as I pushed the "publish comment" button, if we gave this kind of attention to Roseann and the love and grace that she radiates in the closing days of her life, we just might have a chance at changing the world. We might just have a chance at helping people to understand what really matters.

  12. Two Auntees, you're quite right. Some of us bloggers have tried, but we're not Countdown or the Rachel Maddow show.

  13. So, all this is equivalent of teabaggers clapping their hands and saying, "I do believe in dumb bimbos! I do believe in dumb bimbos!"

  14. I've concluded that I'm as bad as the news media, because I turned the spotlight on Sarah by writing this post.
