Happy Hanukkah! - "Ocho Kandelas"
We invite parents into the classroom to tell about family celebrations. Last year a parent taught us the "Ocho Kandelas" song, which is a Hanukkah song in Ladino, a Sephardic language that sounds like Spanish and Hebrew with a little Arabic in there as well. The native Spanish speakers in my class were pretty excited to get the idea of the song, even if the words weren't exactly the same as in Spanish. The video is us learning and practicing the song with the lyrics on the ActivBoard. We say "Kandelikas" a lot, it's pretty fun.

Shamelessly stolen from Paul the BB, who stole it from Jane R. at Facebook, who stole it from YouTube.

My natal church was a wonderful Congregational Church (now UCC) where the minister had one clear goal which was to make sure he didn't raise any anti-Semites. Therefor Sunday school through Junior High was all Old Testament and we spun dreidels (sp?) at Hanukkah and sang a Hanukkah hymn called "Rock of Ages" -- I was so surprised to discover that there was a Christian "Rock of Ages"
ReplyDeleteAlso played dress-up (no booze) at Purim and built booths for Sukkoth, learned the prayers for Passover.
While I am now a reasonably happy Episcopalian -- I am so very grateful to the Congregationalist minister of my youth. (after moving into Senior High -- we finally moved into ALL the other religions -- Buddhism, Hinduism, Catholicism, LDS, whatever.)
What a terrific Sunday school program! I think of Walter Brueggemann and his wonderful lectures on the OT.
ReplyDeleteBest Chanukah song ever.... because it has my name in it!
