Sad News - Gay Marriage Blocked

The gay wedding that was to take place yesterday did not.

From Reuters:

A gay Argentine couple and the mayor of Buenos Aires vowed on Tuesday to appeal a last-minute court ruling that blocked plans for Latin America's first legal same-sex marriage.

Alex Freyre, 39, and Jose Maria Di Bello, 41, were granted a marriage license by a city judge two weeks ago. That ruling gave approval for the two men to wed in the capital despite a national policy defining marriage as between a man and a woman.

But a national judge on Monday ordered the suspension of the ceremony, which had been planned for Tuesday, saying that the city judge had no power to make the earlier ruling.

"The wedding's been suspended but we're appealing to the Supreme Court today so we can figure out which court ruling to follow," said Ivan Pavlovsky, a spokesman for Buenos Aires Mayor Mauricio Macri.

I'm so sorry. There's still hope. We await the Supreme Court ruling.

  2. I hate it when the spoilers win, even if only temporarily.

  3. Even though he obviously already has, may God further bless Alex and Jose, as well as the mayor of Buenos Aires and give them all the strenght to put up with this latest round of bigotry.

  4. The NY senate voted down marriage equality today. Guess the fear mongering is doing its stuff again. Pretty discouraging.

  5. Oh my goodness! What's wrong with those people?

  6. The same thing that's wrong with the governments in our states too. I will never understand how two loving people getting married today threatens the marriages of all the loving couples in the past. Jose and Alex are no threat, they are an opportunity to see how math is magic, how love of one person plus love of one person equals so much more than love of two people. I'll pray for the Supreme Court ruling, and for Jose and Alex and the brave mayor of that most beautiful city, Buenos Aires.

  7. It´s the Roman Catholic Bishops on HIGH LATIN AMERICAN ALERT (surely you know that already, forget Venables, he doesn´t know Costa Rica from Equador...and nobody is going to tell him either)!

  8. I'm sorry but it's very hard to maintain any hope here. What other group is supposed to ask permission for basic human rights and to be treated like human beings? I'm so depressed at the hatred, the ignorance, and the constant litany of refusals. This is WRONG, it's just WRONG and despite all my efforts I am utterly helpless to do anything.

i guess I should just be thankful that I'm not looked up in uganda or being "reparatively raped".

  9. Thejanet, none of it makes sense.

Len, I know that the Roman Catholic bishops put all their weight behind stopping the marriage. Why? José and Alex are just two men. Why all the effort to stop these two men from making the marriage commitment?

IT, I don't blame you for feeling hopeless.

What other group is supposed to ask permission for basic human rights and to be treated like human beings?

Unfortunately too many still. I don't know if you mean in this country or around the world. The women in countries that follow strict Sharia don't have basic human rights. In other strongly patriarchal societies, women don't have equal rights. The RCC bars women from ordination. Despite the fact that we have an African-American president, blacks in this country may have the laws on their side, but that doesn't mean that they have true equality in practice.

I agree. It's wrong, all wrong. I'm not feeling hopeful now, but we can't give up.
