"OPERA AT THE MARKET"
13 November 2009 : an ordinary day at the Central Market of Valencia. Suddenly, beautiful classical music starts sounding over the market stores of fruits and vegetables : fragments of Giuseppe Verdi's "La Traviata" are sung by professional opera singers ! Look at the faces and reactions of the buyers and customers, amazed before such magic and divine music, and by the confidence of good taste. Some are even moved into tears...
Thanks to Paul (A.), who adds "made some cry". Gave me chills.

Speaking as a fat lady I'd like to say, "It ain't over till the fat lady sings, and boy did she sing!"
ReplyDeleteThat's great! Thanks, Paul(A.) and Mimi!!!
I hope viewers stick with the video until the end, because it gets better and better.
ReplyDeleteLoved it, just loved it. Would love to see more such "spontaneous" interventions into the life of the market, ie into our world and economy!
ReplyDeleteWhy can't church be more like this?
ReplyDeleteLa Traviata was my first experience of live opera. A friend, who had an extra ticket, dragged me when we were in high school. I didn't want to go, but she made me go, wouldn't take no for an answer, and I'm glad she did. Traviata is still my very favorite opera of all. First impressions....
ReplyDeleteThat was wonderful, Mimi. Thanks to you and Paul (A.). I saw this post at work and was eager all day to come home when I could watch and listen (I have the computer muted at work). What fun!
ReplyDeleteI also love flash crowds that form and dance or other things. It all helps restore magic and whimsey and pure sensual pleasure, not to mention communal experience, to our lives.
I second Tobias' comment. Would that church were more like this.
I have never been a fan of opera, but watching the shoppers in this video made listening so captivating! I listened as I am sure many in the market must have totally enchanted - this must have been for them, a love song to the music and to the magic it created here for these people.
ReplyDeleteIt's lovely.
ReplyDeleteOK, I'm crying. Now I have to pull myself together and go teach school!
