FROM A FRIEND FROM LONG AGO...

...who no longer knows me very well.
The Catholic Church is bleeding from self-inflicted wounds. The agony that Catholics have felt and suffered is not necessarily the fault of the Church. You have been hurt by a small number of wayward priests that have probably been totally weeded out by now. (My emphasis)

Walk with your shoulders high and you head higher. Be a proud member of the most important non-governmental agency in the United States ... Then remember what Jeremiah said: 'Stand by the roads, and look and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is and walk in it, and find rest for your souls'. Be proud to speak up for your faith with pride and reverence and learn what your Church does for all other religions. Be proud that you're a Catholic."

Please pass this on to every Catholic on your e-mail list.

The church is bleeding from self-inflicted wounds all right, but the following statements in bold print are nothing more than propaganda. Just 2 days ago, I posted on the story from Philadelphia of 21 wayward priests who had not been weeded out until now. Who is responsible for their remaining in ministry if not the "Church", the one, true Roman Catholic Church? Tell me. Who?

  1. "learn what your Church does for all other religions"?

    O_o

Um, work to prevent (via worldly Power-Over) "other religions" from celebrating marriages as those other religions see fit?

  2. JCF, I didn't quote the entire contents of the email, which was long, but the complete email would not do the RCC further credit. It's mostly more propaganda.

  3. Yes, I'm not quite sure what the RCC does for other religions, other than nick stuff, like priests.

"Probably been weeded out" is obviously wishful thinking simply from the way it has been phrased.

  4. I try hard not to be a bitter ex-Roman Catholic, but sometimes it's difficult.

  5. Mimi, bless you. You are more tolerant than I am. I try not to be bitter as well, since I still do love the RCC, in all her shabby glory. My RC friends are truly struggling with what to think and what to do. I get emails saying, in effect, that now the “liberals” are being chased out of the church and Vatican II is, apparently, being rolled back (a la ACNA), that things will get back to normal, whatever that is. I pray for the RCC every day.

  6. Brian, the RCC surely needs our prayers.

  7. Here in the Philadelphia area it is sickening to read the propaganda that is put out there every day. The clergy have brought this mess on themselves and it has been covered up for years at the highest levels.

  8. Whiteycat, what an impact the news must have had for the Roman Catholics in Philly.

A couple of more excerpts from the email:

"Why would newspapers carry on a vendetta on one of the most important institutions that we have today in the United States , namely the Catholic Church?
    ....

A study of American priests showed that most are happy in the priesthood and find it even better than they had expected, and that most, if given the choice, would choose to be priests again in face of all this obnoxious PR the church has been receiving.

Which study? A survey of RC priests in Australia, to which I linked earlier, gives quite different results. Perhaps American priests are happier.

  9. Mimi, did you see this? (Hat-tip, MP)

The (dissenting) blogger writes of his new "JP2 generation priest":

I learned that his “likes” include Fox News, the “Notre Dame Scandal” (the protest against the University’s invitation to president Obama to speak at commencement) and Tea Party Patriots.

The effing TEA PARTY??? I honestly cannot a imagine an organization LESS in line w/ RC Social Teachings (re "the preferential option for the poor").

    Alas.
