But at the Capitol, behind the four doors and the three receptionists and the police guard, [Senate minority leader Mitch] McConnell said he could imagine doing this again.

“I think some of our members may have thought the default issue was a hostage you might take a chance at shooting,” he said. “Most of us didn’t think that. What we did learn is this — it’s a hostage that’s worth ransoming. And it focuses the Congress on something that must be done.”
And I thought the Democrats were over the top in their rhetoric when, according to second-hand accounts, Rep. Mike Doyle (D-Pa.) is quoted as saying, “We have negotiated with terrorists,” and Vice-President Joe Biden as saying the Republicans had “acted like terrorists”.

  1. McConnell has repeatedly made it clear his only interest in D.C. is having and wielding power. Notice he carefully never says who benefits from how he wields such power, because that would be truly revealing.

But he's all about the power, and nothing else. His goal is to make Obama a one-term president. The debt ceiling "negotiations", he told FoxNews, sets the standard for all such discussions into the future (forever and ever, amen, is clearly what he meant). And this, which I have yet to hear his staff deny (why should they?).

    So it goes.

  2. He surely doesn't try to deceive anyone.

And he has such a mild look about him.

  3. "And he has such a mild look about him."

The most devious people can appear harmless.
Actually, I think he looks smug.

  4. susan s., whatever McConnell is, I don't believe he's devious.

He may look and feel smug for the moment, but I don't think the feeling will last. He's ready for the next battle.

  5. McConnell's appearance is surely deceptive. He looks like a kind grandfather to me. Of course, he may be kind to his grandchildren.

  6. And Mme. Defarge knits the name McConnell into her work.

  7. In that picture, he looks like he just wet himself... IMHO...

  8. Whatever y'all say.

McConnell is not a nice man.

  9. I doubt MCC would have been so smug and stubborn if he hadn't the support of the TeaParty members in Congress who seem not only smug but also stupid. Wonder how many will be re-elected?

  10. I believe that the upcoming Wisconsin recall elections on Tuesday of the coming week will tell us much about re-election prospects for neo-cons.

  11. Anonymous, McConnell surely could not do what he did without Republican support in the House.

    BooCat, I heartily agree.
