'HAUNTED HOUSES'

Brown Lady of Raynham Hall

Haunted Houses

by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

All houses wherein men have lived and died
Are haunted houses. Through the open doors
The harmless phantoms on their errands glide,
With feet that make no sound upon the floors.

We meet them at the door-way, on the stair,
Along the passages they come and go,
Impalpable impressions on the air,
A sense of something moving to and fro.

There are more guests at table than the hosts
Invited; the illuminated hall
Is thronged with quiet, inoffensive ghosts,
As silent as the pictures on the wall.

The stranger at my fireside cannot see
The forms I see, nor hear the sounds I hear;
He but perceives what is; while unto me
All that has been is visible and clear.
[...]

So from the world of spirits there descends
A bridge of light, connecting it with this,
O'er whose unsteady floor, that sways and bends,
Wander our thoughts above the dark abyss.
Cackle, cackle. :-D

H/T to The Writer's Almanac for the poem.

  1. The Writer's Almanac noted it was Waugh's birthday the other day, Mimi, and I nearly added a quote or two to your Brideshead post of a few days back, but didn't quite get round to it.

A bit off-thread, sorry. The WA is the link.

  2. What thread, Cathy? You are the thread. Now I am, too.

I still have another post on Brideshead: Lord Marchmain comes home to die.

I just received my copy of 'Betrayal' from Amazon, and I want to have a look at it before I write about the play. I should do the review type post soon after I see the performances, or they become difficult.

  4. (I meant off-thread in that Waugh is not directly related to your post :) )

  5. Cathy, I'm not picky about my visitors staying on topic.

I hope I write the post on 'Betrayal' and don't disappoint you.
