From the Daily Mail:
The Archbishop of Canterbury shared tea, scones and jam with Robert Mugabe as he confronted the dictator over the persecution of Anglicans in Zimbabwe. No doubt Mugabe is a tyrant, but as the Mail tells the story, one pictures the scene with Dr Williams shouting, 'You tyrant! Stop the persecution now!'
....
Dr Rowan Williams urged the tyrant to call a halt to a campaign of terror which has seen thousands of the country's Anglicans forced out of their churches and abused.
Dr Williams later said the tyrant, who is a Catholic, claimed to have been shocked at the level of persecution of Anglicans in his country.
He said: ‘He expressed his concern at the damage the division was doing to communities generally in Zimbabwe.'
I can't imagine Rowan shouting at anyone. Perhaps gritting his teeth, but not shouting.
ReplyDeleteShouted quite loudly at the committee sifting candidates for bishop of Southwark if the posthumous words of Dean Colin Slee are to be believed.
ReplyDeleteYes, susan s., I would have referenced Colin Slee, too.
ReplyDeleteMust I wink when I write?
ReplyDeletesusan s., if you'd take off those damned sunglasses and post a picture of you winking, that would be really helpful. ;-)
ReplyDeleteThose are transitions, Mimi. I can't get them to not darken in the out of doors. Maybe I've got one somewhere that is inside!
ReplyDeleteJust joking, m'dear. Keep your transitions. Sometimes we're a little dim.
ReplyDeleteI wish that this would lead to a positive end for the Anglicans in Zimbabwe but I know it will not because Mugabe is lying. He has known and encouraged the persecution of Anglicans in Zimbabwe and he will continue to do after his tea with Rowan. I do not have good access to the internet so I will have to wait to read the whole story later
ReplyDeleteRudo
Rudo, I fear you are right, but I hope against hope.
ReplyDeleteThe only reason mugobe has stayed in power is by lieing, stealing, play acting, murdering and torture. He inherited one, if not the very best polce and security forces in the world and he has fine tuned them to suit his needs over the last 30 years. One of their jobs is to keep mugobe informed on what is happening.
