Archbisop of Canterbury Rowan Williams
Bishop James Jones - Presidential Address - Diocesan Synod March 2012 from Diocese of Liverpool on Vimeo.
Six dioceses in the Church of England will vote on the proposed covenant this coming Saturday, March 24, 2012:
- Blackburn
- Exeter
- Guildford
- Lincoln
- Oxford
- Peterborough
If Lincoln is gearing up for trying to get the cote through, that is a surprise, as John Saxbee was very much opposed. I was among people in a parish there also much opposed. If the new chap is suddenly in favour, I can't believe he will sway it, and then what about the bishops of Grimsby and Grantham? If Lincoln is to be so treated, then the clergy and laity should see through it.
ReplyDeleteBp Saxbee is a patron of the No Anglican Covenant Coalition. If attempts are underway to present only the pro-covenant side in Lincoln, perhaps the clergy and lay members will be stirred to vote against adoption.
ReplyDeleteA shame they don't show Rowan's one act play in all the Synods. That would soon put an end to this Daft Covenant. He makes it quite clear that there is no good reason to sign on to it by failing to make any positive case whatsoever.
ReplyDeleteApparently the new chap is not so into the "English Sense of Fair Play" as some of his fellows. Even in diocese where the bishop voted yes NACC, Modern Church and others have been allowed to speak. Not Lincoln as the agenda appears. Considering the associations with freedom that name has for Americans, we can only see that as bitterly ironic.
ReplyDeletePray for the voters who must decide. Regardless of which way they vote, the choice is fraught with emotional and faith issues. It is not an easy thing, being in synod when there is more than a thank-your resolution for the arraignments committee before it! I have sat and prayed probably more intensely in those meetings than any other public forum. And no vote I participated in has had this sort of pressure, and potential anger attached. I suspect a number of members this day are thinking, "This is not what I signed-up for!" as they prepare for tomorrow.

In the snare that they set is their own foot caught... I'm just sayin'...
ReplyDeleteTo me, Rowan appears angry in the video, and I don't know if that's helpful to the cause of getting the covenant adopted.
ReplyDeleteJim, I do pray for the members of synod, for wisdom and strength and that God's will be done, not that the covenant will be defeated.
Tobias, yes. Even if the covenant is adopted by a slim margin, it will be a disaster for the pro-covenant side.
Off-topic--does anyone know why "Thinking Anglicans" has disappeared from the Web?
ReplyDeleteDoxy, last night I could not access their website, but I thought it was probably a temporary problem. I don't know why the site is down.
ReplyDeleteJust heard from Simon... a new server is causing the usual "need for adjustments" (just like a new ABC?)
ReplyDeleteTobias, I just wrote to Simon, too. I have not yet heard back, so thanks for your info.
ReplyDeleteIt's odd. Mozilla & Google Chrome are giving a "no website at this URL" message, but TA is coming up Internet Explorer, which I never use except at moments like this.
ReplyDeleteI've heard from others that TA has a new server, and adjustments are being made. They shall return.
ReplyDeleteBut Explorer gives a "not found" if one tries to post to TA. & the site has not been updated since yesterday. Haven't seen anything recent from Simon on facebook, come to think of it.
ReplyDeleteDon't pay attention to the messages, Lapin. When all the adjustments are finished, the blog will be back up.
