R. I. P. EARL SCRUGGS
"Foggy Mountain Breakdown"
Flatt and Scruggs in 1965, Grand Ole Opry (Ryman Auditorium).
Earl Scruggs plays Fireball Mail on one of the Martha White shows in the 60's.
I remember Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs on the Grand Ole Oprey radio show and from their appearances on The Beverly Hillbillies show.

Great memories, Mimi. Golly, it's so easy to take these great ones for granted while they are still with us.
ReplyDeleteMary Clara, Earl was one of the best. I listened to country music in secret, as it wasn't cool amongst my city friends to like that sort of thing. No one in my family cared for the music either. Just me.
ReplyDeleteRIP/RIG!
ReplyDeleteAnother sad milestone as the past recedes ever further away; but they will be remembered forever as past masters of Bluegrass.
ReplyDeleteBTW did you know that Earl Scruggs was one of the few - if not the only - country music stars to protest the Vietnam War? Check out this short YouTube clip of his appearance at the 1969 Moratorium in Washington:

Russ, I did not know that. Good for Earl. Thanks for the info and the video.
ReplyDeleteFoggy Mountain Breakdown, Mimi! I know it's picky, but it was his most famous!
ReplyDeletesusan s., of course. My bad.
ReplyDeleteI think I remember him on "Midwestern Hayride" (WLWC-TV Columbus), god knows there were enough hillbillies in my home that loved it and so did I.
ReplyDeleteBradley, I believe I remember Earl performing on Louisiana Hayride out of Shreveport. The hillbillies in Louisiana were up in the northern part of the state, but I was listening from New Orleans.
