Russ, I just watched a part of Lesley Stahls' interview with Jose Rodriguez, the former head of the CIA's Clandestine Service, the folks who used enhanced interrogation practices on suspected 'terrorists'. It's not pretty, and the decisions to use the techniques came from the highest levels.
What he is suggesting - as libertarians love to do when it's not speech aimed at them - is that it's all fascist and evil and oppressive to actually try to protect people from speech that incites violence against them. To a point, he's right. I think it much more effective to simply make laws, instead, that hold the person responsible for what they said. If, for instance, somebody like Ron Paul gets up and talks about gays negatively, and a Ron Paul supporter in say . . . Utah or someplace gay-bashes, then Ron Paul should be charged with the gay-basher for the same crime, tried and imprisoned. Since those types are unable to comprehend of the connection of cause-and-effect, it's really the only way to teach them to be responsible for themselves and act like humans in a human society.
It certainly is. Just don't try to convince Bushcheney of it.
ReplyDeleteWhich is why "hate speech" is censorship with a PC cover.
