Summary
Dioceses for the Covenant to date: 18
Dioceses against the Covenant to date: 25
There are 2 dioceses yet to vote: Newcastle and York next Saturday, 28 April.
From Paul Bagshaw at Not the Same Stream.
Southwell and Nottingham have 20 bishops?
ReplyDeleteCorrected to 2 from another source. 20 was a typo.
ReplyDeleteTo me it kinda looks like nobody heard much against the covenant and heavy persuasion for in those places.
ReplyDeletePiskie, I've heard from people in England that the votes for the covenant in the two dioceses were not unexpected, but that the vote was so lopsided in favor was something of a surprise.
ReplyDeleteBoth votes predictable given the churchmanship of the diocesans involved, Chichester being a hidebound AC and Butler of Southwell (pronounced "Suthel") an equally intense evangelical (the statement in his wiki biography that "he regularly visits Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda" probably says it all in this context). I doubt there was a balanced presentation to either diocesan synod, though I could be wrong. Of the two remaining votes, be very surprised indeed if Sentamu sits idly by and allows defeat, but again, could be wrong. Newcastle, who knows - can anyone here guess?
ReplyDeleteSentamu will not sit idly by. Of that I am sure. From what I hear, Newcastle could go either way.
ReplyDeleteNote also since the clergy and the laity knew the covenant had been defeated, another vote against wouldn't help but would irritate their own bishops. Prior to the defeat, a vote against even in dioceses where it was almost certain to pass would be an encouragement to others in other dioceses where the decision was more in balance.
ReplyDeleteErp, I expect York will go with Sentamu and perhaps Newcastle also will vote for the covenant if Wharton wants a yes vote.
