'NO MAN'S LAND' - ERIC BOGLE

And I can't help but wonder, now Willie McBride,
Do all those who lie here know why they died?
Did you really believe them when they told you 'The Cause'?
Did you really believe that this war would end wars?
Well the suffering, the sorrow, the glory, the shame
The killing, the dying, it was all done in vain,
For Willie McBride, it all happened again,
And again, and again, and again, and again.
It's a song that was written about the military cemeteries in Flanders and Northern France. In 1976, my wife and I went to three or four of these military cemeteries and saw all the young soldiers buried there. —Eric Bogle

  1. Thanks - was just listening to our local station - they played a medley of songs of the Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and ended the set with And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda http://youtu.be/zR6E_HZCQAI

  2. Yes, wars always end with a good many dead and even more wounded in body, mind, and spirit. Yesterday was a sad day for me. I saw no cause to celebrate.
