Ah, and there was I last evening, with about 5 Episcopal clergy and our spouses/partners, including one retired Lutheran pastor, saying prayers to the four directions, the four seasons, the four elements and the four gospels. We wore flowers in our hair and had wands of ribbon. Afterwards, we feasted on fried chicken, potato salad, chili, a yummy baked squash casserole and also much wine. Dessert was not forgotten: homemade brownies, pecan pie (also homemade) and vanilla ice cream. And, also much scotch.
I'm not sure I care what happened at Stonehenge. The sun rose beautifully here on Rehoboth Bay. Happy Solstice, everyone.
Elizabeth, your celebration sounds lovely. The company, food, and drink are worthy of envy. Still, Stonehenge is THE place to be to celebrate the Summer Solstice. No matter that the sun could not be seen, who would have wanted to miss the splendid drumming and shouting of the fella clad in the deer head and hide?
Thanks, Mimi, but I'll take the ceremony at Elizabeth's any day over the guy in the video. Also - much closer. I could drive to Elizabeth's and the meal sounds great!
I never like to be in a crowd like that where only one person has the answer to what should be said, but can only be understood by a few. I slept thru it all. Not saying everyone should, but it's what I did.
Oh my friends, please recognize the irony. I don't like crowds and avoid them whenever possible. The Stonehenge celebration is not at all my sort of thing. Had I been there, the drumming and shouting for an extended period of time would have driven me mad.
I've got an idea - Next Summer Solstice celebration at Mimi's!!! We will make it a par-tay extraordinaire! Something to rival Fat Tuesday! And, I'll make the potato salad!
I'd love to have y'all here at Llangollen on the Bay but I fear we've had too many reunions in the NE Corridor. Let's plan now for a Reunion and Solstice Gathering in NOLA. I'm going to start saving up my pennies for the trip. We'll have to enlist Mimi's help in finding cheap local digs to lay our heads for a few days, and maybe some local tour guiding (spare me the church tour and bring on the parks, zoos, museums and French Quarter), but I think it would be FABULOUS.
Perhaps the year after, we could do it at Llangollen on The Bay. I can sleep two - in single beds or four in two double beds - and there's an inexpensive motel about 4 miles from here at $45 per night. But, for NEXT year, let's go to NOLA.
Elizabeth, sounds good to me, though we'd be hard put to meet the price in Llangollen...unless y'all wanted to come to Thibodaux, where there's nothing to do.
Hmmm. With good friends there is always something to do. Especially if they be Piskies. You might even find a case of champagne on the doorstep. But just in case, you could invite Paul(A.), Tobias and Doug with their endless supply of wit.
The video was interestingly primitive considering the feat of the engineering skill that it took to build Stonehenge.

ReplyDeleteElizabeth, I second your motion! Tom will make jambalaya, and I may even brush up on my rusty cooking skills and make something.
ReplyDeleteI still vote for Elizabeth's place ... a whole lot closer. I'd find it difficult to get down to the bayou.
ReplyDeletewhiteycat, I'd find it difficult to get up there, so where does that leave us? I think it's way past time for a bloggers reunion in New Orleans. :-)
