David Corn at Mother Jones:
During a private fundraiser earlier this year, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney told a small group of wealthy contributors what he truly thinks of all the voters who support President Barack Obama. He dismissed these Americans as freeloaders who pay no taxes, who don't assume responsibility for their lives, and who think government should take care of them. Fielding a question from a donor about how he could triumph in November, Romney replied:
Romney speaks freely amongst his own kind what they want to hear, but I'm not sure if he really believes what he's saying. The video should hurt Romney badly, but who knows? At least, he's gonna have some 'splainin' to do. Romney's talking about me.There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe the government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it. That that's an entitlement. And the government should give it to them. And they will vote for this president no matter what…These are people who pay no income tax.
He may not know what he is saying or I don't understand what he is saying. In one line in this video Romney says: "So he'll be out there talking about tax CUTS for the rich." (emphasis added)
ReplyDeleteAs one of those independent voters he references, I don't like him at all.
ReplyDeleteAnd I mailed in my quarterly taxes today, thank you very much!
Romney's talking about me as one in the 47% solidly in Obama's corner. I'm hopeless - a deadbeat. Still, we do pay income tax. Fancy that - deadbeats who pay taxes!
ReplyDeleteDoes Mitt Romney pay income taxes? Just askin'.
ReplyDeleteIT, Romney said he pays taxes, but for the tax returns he won't make public, he has never said he paid income taxes. And there was the year of the amnesty in 2009...
DeleteAnd isn't it interesting to compare the map of the top ten and bottom ten states with no-income-tax filers to a map of Republican and Democratic states projected for the upcoming election?
ReplyDeleteWho would have guessed?
Thanks for the links, Paul (A.). I didn't catch your second link at first, so I found another map. Not only am I a deadbeat, but I'm from a deadbeat red state.
DeleteNice of him to throw the issue of his own tax payments back center stage, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteLapin, have we ever had such a doofus as a candidate? Romney makes Bush look like a genius.
DeleteSo Eisenhower era it's not true. Survival, not retro. They could hire the whole family as "Mad Men" extras and not even have to prep or dress 'em..
